Today we’d like to introduce you to Nya Robinson.
Hi Nya, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Nyomi’s Puddin’ started with a craving—and a whole lot of faith. I was just a mom in the kitchen, trying to recreate the comfort of a good ol’ Southern-style pudding but with my own twist. I didn’t have a storefront or fancy equipment—just a spoon, a dream, and a drive to create something that felt like home in a cup.
I started small, selling from my house, then setting up under a tent in a local barbershop parking lot. I’d prep in a commissary kitchen over an hour away and bring everything back just to get in front of people. It was hot, it was hard—but it was real. And little by little, word spread.
A few years before starting the business, I experienced the loss of my daughter through miscarriage. That heartbreak changed me. I didn’t know it then, but her memory would later become the heartbeat behind everything I’ve built. Naming the business after her—Nyomi—was my way of turning pain into purpose. It gave me a reason to keep going, even when things got tough.
Since then, I’ve sold thousands of puddin’ cups, landed in retail stores, fulfilled countless catering orders, and most recently, opened my very first storefront in Roanoke Rapids, NC. I’ve hired a small team and created a space rooted in Southern comfort, Black joy, and faith. And we’re still just getting started. Every spoonful of Nyomi’s Puddin’ carries a piece of that story—and is a reminder that sweetness can still rise from sorrow.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, the road hasn’t been smooth, and beyond the typical challenges of limited resources, the toughest part has been keeping my faith in God strong through setbacks. There were times when things didn’t go as planned, when doubt crept in, or when the noise of what others thought threatened to shake my confidence. Staying focused and believing in myself—especially when the path looked unclear—was the real uphill battle.
But each challenge became an opportunity to lean deeper into my faith and to remind myself why I started this journey in the first place. That perseverance is what keeps Nyomi’s Puddin’ moving forward, even when the road feels rough.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Nyomi’s Puddin’ is an artisan dessert brand that specializes in cold, layered pudding cups combined with cookies. Our puddin’ is unique because it can be enjoyed both frozen and thawed without losing its creamy texture or delicious flavor, unlike traditional ice cream or pudding products.
We’re best known for standout flavors like Biscoff Caramel, No-Nanas, and Strawberry Crunch, each crafted to deliver a comforting yet fresh take on classic sweets.
What sets us apart is the quality and versatility of our product—dessert that’s convenient, indulgent, and made with care. Whether you want a quick treat on the go, a catering option for your event, or something special from one of our retail partners, Nyomi’s Puddin’ offers a unique experience in every bite.
I’m most proud of how we’ve grown from a small home kitchen operation to having a physical storefront and retail presence, while maintaining the personal touch and quality that our customers love. We’re constantly working to expand our offerings and bring more sweetness to the community.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Absolutely, I wouldn’t be where I am today without the incredible support system around me. From the very beginning, my family has been my rock—offering encouragement, helping with everything from taste testing to packaging, and believing in my vision even when I doubted myself. (Special thanks to my mom, pops and partner)
I’ve also been blessed with mentors and community leaders who offered guidance and advice on everything from business strategy to marketing. Their experience helped me navigate challenges and grow with confidence.
My customers and retail partners deserve a huge shoutout too. Their loyalty and feedback have shaped the brand and pushed me to keep improving.
And, of course, my small but dedicated team is essential—each person brings passion and care that helps keep the day-to-day running smoothly and the quality consistently high.
The success of Nyomi’s Puddin’ is a collective effort, and I’m grateful every day for those who choose to walk this path with me.
