Exploring Life & Business with Will Armstrong of Oak City Homes LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Armstrong.

Hi Will, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born an entrepreneur. In high school, I spent my summers landscaping and eventually built a small business with one of my friends. When we weren’t mowing lawns, we were sweeping houses for his dad’s custom home building company or helping on job sites. I also spent time working with my uncle, who was a union carpenter. So from early on, I got to see how things were built, both in business and on the job.

After high school, I went on to study business at the University of Akron. While there, I interned with Fortune 500 companies, and I quickly realized the office life wasn’t for me. I didn’t want to sit behind a desk all day chasing someone else’s vision. I wanted to build my own.

After graduation, I took a job with a national homebuilder in their project manager training program. It was a good opportunity to learn the ropes, budgets, timelines, trades, client communication, but after two years, that entrepreneurial itch was still there. I had always known I’d circle back to entrepreneurship, and I had a gut feeling I’d thrive in the trades, especially with my customer service mindset and focus on quality.

That’s when Oak City Homes was born.

What started as a one-man operation turned into a full-service design-build company with a team of talented, caring people who genuinely love what they do. Together, we help the homeowners of Wake Country create their dream homes both through a high quality product and a positive experience their remember.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? Not always, but the challenges are what shaped the company we are today.

Like any business, especially in construction, there have been ups and downs. Early on, I was wearing every hat: sales, design, project management, customer service. It taught me a lot, fast. There were long days, tough lessons, and the occasional curveball that forced me to slow down and improve how we did things.

Remodeling is a personal process. You’re not just working on a house, you’re working in someone’s home. And that comes with a level of responsibility I don’t take lightly. Over time, I’ve learned how to manage that complexity while keeping communication clear, expectations aligned, and our team focused on delivering a great experience.

The biggest challenge was building the right systems and team so we could consistently deliver high-quality work without relying on one person to hold it all together. But that challenge became our biggest strength. We’ve grown into a team that’s process-driven, detail-oriented, and deeply committed to helping homeowners feel confident and supported through every step of their renovation.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Oak City Homes is a design-build remodeling company based right here in Raleigh. We specialize in major renovations, including kitchens, bathrooms, whole-home remodels, and additions. We are known for delivering high-quality work with a process that’s organized, transparent, and homeowner-friendly.

Our clients come to us because they want more than just a contractor. They want a partner. Someone who listens, communicates clearly, and helps bring their vision to life without all the usual remodeling stress. What sets us apart is how we manage projects from start to finish. We combine sharp design, detailed planning, and professional project management so our clients always know where things stand, what’s coming next, and who’s responsible for what.

We don’t do patchwork projects or quick flips. Our work is intentional, long-lasting, and designed around how people actually live in their homes. We care about the end result, but we care just as much about how we get there. That’s why our clients often tell us how much they appreciated the experience just as much as the finished space.

Brand-wise, I’m proud of the fact that Oak City Homes has built a reputation around trust. In an industry that sometimes gets a bad rap, we’ve focused on doing things the right way. Being honest, owning our mistakes, and always putting the homeowner first.

If you’re planning a remodel and want a partner who truly respects your home and your time, we’d love to talk.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is building things that last. Not just the physical spaces we create, but the relationships, the reputation, and the way people feel when they work with us.

I care about doing things the right way, even when it’s not the easiest or fastest option. Whether it’s how we treat a client, how we manage a project, or how we show up as a team, integrity matters. At the end of the day, your home is personal. If someone trusts us with that, I take it seriously.

I’m also driven by growth, not just for myself, but for the people around me. I want my team to grow, I want our clients to feel empowered and informed, and I want to leave every project, and every person, better than I found them. That’s what gets me out of bed in the morning.

So whether we’re remodeling a home in Raleigh or helping a homeowner across the country learn how to manage their own renovation, the goal is the same: create something solid, honest, and meaningful, and do it with care.
