An Inspired Chat with Bria Monae of Downtown

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Bria Monae . Check out our conversation below.

Hi Bria , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day are really about setting the tone. I like to start my mornings slow and intentional, focusing on things that keep me grounded and calm. On my best mornings, I’ll do some light yoga at home to wake my body up, then put on music while I make breakfast and a cup of tea or coffee. I might take a few minutes to read or journal, and I always check my schedule so I know what’s ahead. When I don’t have much to do I definitely take some time to sleep in and enjoy not having to do much.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’d consider myself a creative before anything else. Art has always been a focal point in my life, and I tend to view the world through that lens. My work doesn’t live in a single niche—and honestly, I hope it never does. I paint, tattoo, draw, engrave, and create in whatever medium inspires me in the moment. Right now, my biggest focus is tattooing, especially larger pieces, and I’m enjoying watching my style evolve over time. What makes my brand special is that it’s a true reflection of my creative curiosity—every piece, whether on canvas or skin, carries a part of my personal perspective as an artist.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
It’s hard to choose just one relationship, so I’d have to say my family as a whole. From my mom and dad to my sister, grandma, aunt, and uncles—they’ve all played a role in shaping how I see myself. They’ve always encouraged me to go after the things I want, while giving me the space to be myself, to be creative, and to live life on my own terms. They made sure I knew it was okay to be different and never tried to put me in a box, and that kind of support has been the foundation for how I move through the world today.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell my younger self to be fearless. Go after what you want and create the life you envision for yourself—it’s possible. Most importantly, cherish the people who are part of the journey with you, especially those who support and help you along the way. They’re a big part of who you are.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I admire my mother and sister for their integrity, generosity, and drive—they lead with authenticity and a genuine care for others.

I admire my father for his heart and openness, qualities that have taught me the strength in vulnerability and kindness.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m by myself creating or when I’m with the people I love. Both moments give me a sense of calm and grounding, just in different ways—one fills me from within, and the other surrounds me with connection.
