Joshua Coogler shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Joshua , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I have been enjoying hiking, all over North Carolina, and seeing all the different habitats that’s this state has to offer. There are so many fun places to explore and it’s my favorite thing to do right now outside of work.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Joshua Coogler, I am a photographer that mainly focuses on macro. I love to go hiking and exploring all over North Carolina and seeing what kinds of tiny bugs I can find and photograph. I’ve been doing macro photography for over 10 years and some of my favorite things to photograph are mites and tiny bugs called springtails!
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I think getting my first macro lens really shaped how I see the world. I remember I took photos of everything I could think of just to see how it would look up close. When I went outside with it, it opened up a whole world of life happening outside that I didn’t know existed before.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
My biggest fear that has held me back in my life is probably my social anxiety. I have been a part different things like an astronomy club that I rarely went to even though I thought it was really fun, because of my social anxiety. It has kept me from going many places and pursuing other clubs that would other wise be perfect for me. That’s something that I think is a fear that has held me back most that I could work on in the future.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I think my closest friends would say being outside is the thing that really matters to me. I really just want to be out exploring as much as possible, seeing all the different plants and animals and habitats that we have around here. Finding endangered plants, discovering new species, there is so much to see and places to explore.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would probably stop laying in bed as much and get out and take advantage of that time. There are many times that I plan on going out and taking photos but instead I just get into bed and end up spending a little too long there. If I only had 10 years left I’d probably feel like I would need to make it count and go and see as much as possible.
