Story & Lesson Highlights with Michael Newby of Southeast Raleigh

Michael Newby shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Michael, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Lately it’s been DJing, even though I barely know what I’m doing.

I just got my setup and honestly, it’s been a mix of excitement and confusion, but mostly fun. I’ll start playing around with tracks, turning knobs like I know what they do, and before I know it, hours have passed. There’s no pressure, or expectations.

What I like most is the newness of it. I’m not trying to be a professional DJ, but every time I put on those headphones, it feels like I step out of real life and into a creative zone where even mistakes sound like progress.

It’s new, it’s fun, and it gives me a break I didn’t know I needed.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Definitely, I’m Michael Newby, I run No Pressure Power Washing in Raleigh. I started it back in 2019 because I wanted to make exterior cleaning simple and professional, without all the hassle people usually deal with.

I’ve always been the type who likes solving problems and finding better ways to do things, so the business really grew out of that. What started as me just helping people take care of their homes turned into building something that gives them peace of mind.

Now when people call us, they don’t just get a clean house, they get a service they can count on. That’s the part I’m proud of, making life easier for people.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
As a kid I kept to myself, but I liked figuring things out on my own. I wasn’t chasing attention, I just enjoyed working with my hands, solving problems, and getting good at the things I cared about.

I followed the rules enough to stay out of trouble, but I always had my own way of doing things. If I thought there was a better way, I was going to try it. I liked learning by doing and finding my own path.

Before the world started telling me who I had to be, I was curious, creative, and stubborn in a good way. I trusted my gut, I liked solving problems, and I never minded going my own direction if it felt right.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yeah, there were a few moments like that, but one really sticks with me.

Back when I was working full-time and trying to grow the business on the side, it felt like I was pushing a rock uphill. I’d get home drained, still have a list of things to do, and the bookings weren’t steady yet. I remember sitting in my truck one night thinking, maybe this isn’t gonna work, maybe I’m asking too much of myself.

The money wasn’t even the main thing, it was the weight of it all. The long days, the stress, the pressure I was putting on myself. For a minute, I almost convinced myself to play it safe, keep the business small, stick to the job, and avoid the risk.

But then I thought about what I was really chasing. The kind of life I wanted for my family, the freedom of building something of my own. And I knew I couldn’t live with the question of what if if I walked away.

So I doubled down. It was slow at first, but little by little things started to turn. And to this day, whenever it gets hard, I go back to that moment in the truck and remind myself why I kept going.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I used to think I had to wait until the timing was perfect before starting something. That I needed all the knowledge, all the money, and every detail figured out before I could move. Looking back, that mindset kept me stuck way longer than it needed to.

What I’ve learned is nobody ever really feels ready. The people who make it aren’t always the smartest or the most talented, they’re just the ones who start anyway. Ready or not, they move.

That’s how we operate now. When we started No Pressure Power Washing, it went from idea to our first job in about a week and a half. We didn’t wait for perfect, we just got started. We prepare, but we don’t sit around waiting for everything to line up. We take action, we adjust, and we keep pushing. That’s the difference. That’s why we’re here telling this story instead of still wondering what might have been.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I retired tomorrow, our customers would miss how simple we make the whole process. No waiting around for estimates, no cash only headaches, no second calls because the job wasn’t done right.

What we’ve built is more than just a service, it’s a standard. Clear communication, upfront pricing, and work that speaks for itself. We treat every property like it matters, because it does.

The dirt will always come back, but what we bring is peace of mind. And that’s exactly why we’re here to stay.
