We’re looking forward to introducing you to Tasha Brown. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Tasha, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of my career, family is what brings me joy. My husband and I are raising some amazing people and we can’t get enough of them. When I started my business, it was for my family. Little Miss Cakes is a cottage cakery, built so I could be an at-home, homeschooling mom. Owning my own business allows me to schedule work around my family and not the other way around.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Tasha and I’m the owner and cake artist at Little Miss Cakes in Raeford, NC. My cakery is unique from others. #1 – I only take on a few orders a week. This means that my business is focused on each customer and their order. I never compromise on quality or attention to detail. And speaking of quality… #2 – Superior ingredients = superior taste at Little Miss Cakes. I make everything from scratch with no artificial preservatives. My butter cakes are iced with Swiss meringue buttercream which is light and smooth on the palate. It doesn’t hit you over the head with sugar! #3 – I pride myself on excellent customer service. I’m attentive and patient. I provide every customer with cake care instructions which include how to transport, display, cut, and store your cake. Customers get a personal experience with Little Miss Cakes.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
So many of my life experiences have taught me that knowledge is a powerful life tool.
After highschool, I went straight to college even though I was unsure of what I wanted to do with my life. I could have saved a lot of money if I’d taken time getting work experience rather than paying for an expensive degree that I’ve never used. This decision affects the advice I give my own children as they grow and look into their future.
We go through life, picking up and seeking knowledge that directs our choices later in life. When you KNOW better, you DO better!
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes! The cake business has a lot of ebb and flow. You’ve got to learn not to stress when you’re fully booked and not to be discouraged when business is slow.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
No one tells you that when you start a small business, you have to become a social media content creator as well! I didn’t train for that! If you see my facebook and instagram, you’ll see the real me – no makeup, shabby clothes, hair in a messy bun. I’m a homeschool mom working hard for her family. I stay organized and run an amazing cakery, but I show the real me to my customers.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Making cakes for people is right up my alley. I’m an artist. I love to create. I’m a minimalist. I cannot stand clutter. I love people. It thrills me to be a part of special moments in other people’s lives. Cakes allow me to be creative and fulfill my artistic desires. Cake gets eaten unlike most art which can sit around and clutter a room. Cakes become a joyful memory for the customers who celebrate with a cake from Little Miss Cakes.
