Today we’d like to introduce you to Christie Kornegay.
Hi Christie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been a physical therapist for 15 years. I graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 2010 with my Doctorate in Physical Therapy, and I’ve spent most of my career in orthopedics—helping people recover from everything from everyday aches and pains to major surgeries and traumatic injuries.
Over time, I began to see the limitations of the traditional, insurance-based model. There’s so much more physical therapists can offer when we’re not constrained by insurance rules or short appointment slots. Outside of orthopedic surgeons, we are the musculoskeletal experts—and we’re uniquely trained to identify and treat movement dysfunctions before they turn into pain.
I opened Local Point Physical Therapy and Wellness, in 2024, a concierge and mobile PT practice serving Wake Forest and surrounding areas, to break out of the traditional insurance model and deliver one-on-one, hands-on care that supports not only recovery, but long-term health and well-being.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all—it’s been a learning process every step of the way. One of the first challenges was simply figuring out where to start. I knew how to treat patients, but legally starting a business was a completely different world. Navigating the paperwork, registrations, and logistics felt overwhelming at first.
Then came the added layer of medical and physical therapy compliance. I had to learn what rules applied to a mobile, cash-based practice and make sure I was operating fully within scope while still offering the flexible, high-quality care I envisioned.
But honestly, one of the hardest things was pushing through self-doubt. It’s easy to look at others who’ve built something great and assume they had all the answers from the start. I had to keep reminding myself that everyone starts somewhere—and if other people can figure it out, so can I. So I just kept putting one foot in front of the other, even on the days it felt uncertain.
We learn through struggle. Each challenge has taught me something and brought me closer to creating a business that aligns with PT philosophy.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a physical therapist, I’ve spent my career in orthopedics, treating everything from injuries and trauma to back pain, TMJ issues, and post-surgical recovery. What makes my work a little different is that I run a mobile practice — instead of patients coming to me, I bring treatment directly to them, whether that’s at home, at work, or wherever they feel most comfortable.
Over the past 5 years I have done advanced training and certification in Dry Needling, a technique that isn’t usually covered by insurance but can be a real game-changer for many people. Dry needling uses a very fine, sterile needle to target tight or irritated muscles, often called trigger points. By stimulating these points, we can release tension, calm irritated nerves, improve blood flow, and help the body reset and heal. Many patients feel relief in pain and stiffness almost immediately, and it often helps improve pain and stiffness more than other interventions like massage.
For me, dry needling is one of the best examples of how the practice of physical therapy is evolving. It allows me to blend my orthopedic background with modern approaches that help patients get better faster and more completely.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most in my business is keeping the patient at the center of their care. Too often, treatment is dictated by insurance or time limits instead of the person sitting in front of you. In my practice, I get to slow down and really listen. That extra time not only helps me treat more effectively, but it also allows me to serve as a guide. If I’m not the right provider for a patient’s needs, I can point them in the right direction and help them take the next step. Many of my patients see me as their first stop — almost like a primary care point for musculoskeletal issues — because they know I’ll take the time to understand their problem and connect them with the right solution
