We’re looking forward to introducing you to Michelle Wetsch. Check out our conversation below.
Michelle, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
Definitely the time and work and cost of what it takes to do what I do. My cakes aren’t cheap and it’s due to everything that goes on behind the scenes. School, tools, skills, the years it’s taken for me to get here, The challenges I have to adapt to daily. The time I spend away from my family. The slow months. The all nighters. The bills. It’s really not just about cake. There’s so much more that goes into something that ends up looking like, “just a simple cake.” What is simple?
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Michelle Wetsch. I am 35 years old. I am happily married and raising two beautiful daughters who are 9 and 6. When I’m not Momming at home, you can typically find me inside Flavor District Monday to Friday. I focus on making made from scratch custom cakes and baked goods. I like to focus on wedding cakes but I can pretty much make a cake to fit whatever season or reason. I pride myself in my cleanliness when I am working in the kitchen, and my attention to every detail when it comes to my cakes. I work best with creative freedom and I love a unique challenge!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
Definitely watching my parents. They’re the most hard working people I know. Growing up my dad was always working and traveling for work and doing everything he could to keep our family safe and secured. My Mom is the most selfless person I know and works just as hard making sure everything is in its place, running smoothly, clean and efficiently. Even to this day, they still do everything they can to help my family. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without their help and support. I was always taught to do my best and work hard and try. If I fail, it’s okay… get up and try again.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Once in a blue moon I’ll have that customer that I can’t please. I’ll make a mistake (like most humans do) and they’ll really let me hear it. I’m such a perfectionist in my craft so when I get that bad review or feedback it really cuts deep. It’s those moments and when things are slow and moneys tight that I’ll find myself doubting everything and feel like a total failure. But it’s also in those moments where I always turn to God. I pray. I keep the faith. I remember I am THAT girl and I get up, learn from it, and push on through. God is greater than all the highs and all the lows.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Of course. I am a terrible liar. That’s too much effort to keep up with and It’s honestly hard for me to fake it. My mom always tells me that my face shows every emotion. I guess that’s a blessing and a curse, but I’m working on that. At the end of the day, I’m still human. I’m still a real person with real feelings, trying to raise a family and manage a business… all while experiencing life for the first time too. I’m pretty open and transparent and I feel like if I show that to people, maybe someone somewhere can relate. You really never know what people are going through in their day to day. I always try to be nice, outgoing, understanding, and give people the benefit of the doubt. Because of this I have met so many wonderful people. I have met many strangers and have had many clients that have become life long friends.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Always. I grew up a golfer. Golf is about honesty and integrity even when no one is looking. God always is. Everyday I try my best. Sometimes it doesn’t feel like I’m doing much, but that’s when I have to take a step back and remember that success looks different every day to everyone. Even the small wins count. I will always put my all in everything I do. I won’t give you something that I’m not proud of. I will always go above and beyond. I never ask for the praise but it sure feels great to hear it.
