We recently had the chance to connect with Mya Fountain and have shared our conversation below.
Mya, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
I’m chasing financial freedom, not just for myself, but for my family and friends as well. My goal is to be in a position where I can bless others, give generously, and create opportunities without having to check an account balance first. If I were to stop chasing that vision, I’d feel like I’m settling for less and allowing the people around me to continue struggling month to month. For me, it’s not just about money,it’s about impact, responsibility, and making sure that I’m using my talents and drive to change lives, starting with the people closest to me.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Mya Starr’ Fountain, a 27-year-old licensed natural hair stylist and the owner of Starr’ Artistry, which I started eight years ago. Hair has always been more than just a career for me, it’s a calling. I love accommodating people and their hair, but what truly inspires me is the look on someone’s face when they see themselves in the mirror and feel beautiful, confident, and cared for.
Recently, I’ve expanded into a new venture called Styled Society. It’s not just a salon, it’s a lifestyle brand and a creative hub. Styled Society is where beauty, wellness, and culture meet. We’re building a space that not only offers premium hair and beauty services, but also empowers other professionals, provides room for community events, and even incorporates a thrift boutique that allows people to stay stylish without breaking the bank.
What makes Styled Society unique is its heart. It’s designed to give back, to create safe and inclusive spaces, and to redefine what it means to experience beauty and lifestyle today. To me, it’s about much more than business, it’s about building a movement where people can connect, feel seen, and be inspired.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mom saw me long before I ever fully saw myself. She has always been my biggest supporter and driving force. From the very beginning, she showed up in every way, not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. She’s the one who constantly asked me about my next steps, sometimes before I even had a plan in place. That gentle push kept me moving forward, even in seasons when I doubted myself.
She made sure I never lacked anything, not just in terms of material needs, but also in love, encouragement, and belief. To this day, her faith in me is one of the reasons I have the courage to keep chasing bigger dreams. I carry her sacrifices and her lessons with me in everything I do, and I hope that the legacy I’m building honors the foundation she gave me.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me lessons that success never could. It reminded me to keep God first in everything I do, not just when things are going well, but especially in the moments when everything feels uncertain. In those seasons of struggle, I learned perseverance, boldness, and a kind of fearlessness that can only come from walking through fire and still choosing to keep going.
Suffering also gave me hunger, a deeper drive to build something meaningful, not just for myself but for the people around me. It stripped away the illusion that money alone could define success. I realized that if my heart’s posture is right, if I stay rooted in faith and purpose, the resources will come. Success might have taught me how to enjoy the fruit, but suffering taught me how to cultivate the soil, to plant seeds even when I can’t see the harvest yet.
More than anything, suffering shaped my character. It reminded me that setbacks don’t define me, but they do refine me. And that resilience, that unshakable trust in God, is something no amount of success could ever teach on its own.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
For me, everything begins and ends with faith and love. I can do nothing without them, and honestly, nothing is worth doing without them. Without faith, I wouldn’t have the strength to keep pushing through challenges, and without love, all the work, all the striving, would feel empty and meaningless.
The Bible talks about this in Ephesians 3:17–19, where it says we are to be ‘rooted and grounded in love’ so that we can fully grasp the depth of God’s love and be filled with His fullness. That scripture has always reminded me that faith and love aren’t optional, they are the foundation.
Faith keeps me anchored to God’s promises, and love keeps me connected to people. Together, they shape everything I do and ensure that whatever I build isn’t just successful on the surface, but meaningful at the core. Without them, nothing I do would matter.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Honestly, the thing I’m doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years is procrastinating, and waiting on other people to grab hold of my vision before I move on it myself. When I procrastinate, I’m delaying the very opportunities God has already placed in my hands. And when I wait for others to catch up, I’m putting my future on pause, hoping for validation instead of walking boldly in what I’ve been called to do.
The truth is, time is the one thing I can’t get back. Every moment I delay is planting seeds of regret that could grow years down the line. But the beautiful thing is that I recognize it now. I know that if I don’t take ownership of my vision, nobody else will carry it the way I’m meant to.
So while procrastination and waiting might seem small today, they can cost me far more in the future. That’s why I’m learning to move with urgency, to trust the vision I’ve been given, and to stop asking for permission to do what I’ve already been purposed to do.
