Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Embers Cards of Charlotte

We recently had the chance to connect with Embers Cards and have shared our conversation below.

Embers, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
We think one of the things people struggle with is how our society prioritizes efficiency over interconnectivity and individuals over the collective.

The lack of community and human connection on a vulnerable level is something we all feel and crave.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
At Embers, we prioritize human connection, lifestyle, and community.

We’ve designed a card game that sparks storytelling
around the fire. Inspired by the ancient African philosophy of Ubuntu, “I am
because we are”, and Nsibidi writing, our aim is to create stories that
linger with your friends, long after the trip.

A card is ripped from the card book, read and answered, then thrown into
the fire to seal the deal. The color of the fire informs the next round and
adds a wow factor for our players.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Distrust, dishonesty, disingenuity are some of the things that break the bonds between people. We forget we are all humans that need support and we tend to neglect the play, spontaneity, awkwardness, vulnerability, and intention that come with building bonds.

But these are all things that consistently build and restore us and give us connection and joy. They are essential to our fundamental being and must be prioritized.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
One of our founders, Ani’s, fear is not being able to correct a failure and the permanence of it.
Caroline’s fear is letting people see her true colors because it might be too much.
Lara’s fear is not being able to do something because she was too late to start it.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Okay, let’s take a step back, who are the smart people?

What we are getting wrong is assuming that the smart people are the people in places of power, may that be a manager, a CEO, a president, or even a college graduate.

In reality, for the system that is set up, labeling people as smart can often discourage people’s ideas and stifle innovation, so we want to remind everyone that you are smart and you do have good ideas, and if we rewrite the narrative, and support people where they are, we can explore all avenues of human capabilities.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
Our customers would miss our authenticity, our mission, our trips, the effort we put into building the community, and the products we made.
