JaNayasia Kelly of Wilmington on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with JaNayasia Kelly and have shared our conversation below.

JaNayasia, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
While I am a Makeup Artist, I’m a mommy to 2 beautiful babies. I start my day with my early riser, my daughter, we eat talk & usually she leaves me for Ms. Rachel & that’s usually around the time my son wakes up. I prep for the day ahead & come up with some fun activities to do with the kids. On days I work, I typically get a travel day (I love those the most haha), a lot of quiet time, self reflection & a chance to site see places I’ve never been. Days on set is like being with my second family, some days are 8 hours & some go up to 12, so I get to connect with many other creatives & build friendships. Also calling my kids 10x a day to make sure they aren’t making anyone go crazy lol!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is JaNayasia, I am a Professional Makeup Artist & Esthetician. My focus is TV, Film & Special Occasion. What I love the most about my artistry is being able to create a new vision with every client I meet. Being in the Film Industry, the unique thing I enjoy is the “get up & go” mentality you have to have. Always staying prepared & waiting for the next opportunity to come your way. It keeps me on my toes. Beauty is how I express myself, how I found my purpose in life. My brand stands firm on all things Esthetics, meaning not just makeup but achieving healthy & glowing Skin. To end the year, I’m excited to see the opportunities that come my way. Stay tuned!

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My mother hands down taught me the most when it comes to work. Growing up, I don’t believe I’ve ever seen anyone work as hard as she has. I watched her go through some of the hardest times in life & she always pushed through, never giving up. She taught me that nothing is ever handed to you & to never give up on your vision, even if someone else did not understand it. She gave tough love & at first I never understood why, but becoming an adult, it has shaped me into who I am today & the reason I work hard.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering will teach you to never be comfortable, always continue to work for the next thing. It made me dig deeper within myself than I ever have. Tested me harder than I could imagine, but within that came my strength. All careers have highs & lows, and during my lows, at my breaking point ready to give up, I found out how strong I was mentally. Making it to success made me appreciate my struggle even more because had it not been for my suffering, I would’ve mistreated my success.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
I only know one way to be & that’s always been the real me. I’m very transparent about who I am, my journey to success. Being yourself is what sets you apart from the rest, because only you can be you. I take pride in who I am & I want to attract the people, friends & clientele that accept me!

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What light inside you have you been dimming?
The one thing anyone close to will say about me, is I do not give myself the credit or grace I should. I’m very humble, so humble to a point, I downplay myself at times & forget that it is okay to pat myself on the back & be confident in who I worked hard to be! It can be challenging because I enjoy staying in my bubble, but I’m learning that’s it’s okay to not only be confident in myself, but show it as well!
