April Tyner of Hickory on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to April Tyner. Check out our conversation below.

Hi April, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
A big misconception is that realtors just unlock doors. In reality, most of the work is behind the scenes—researching the market, negotiating, managing deadlines, and solving problems. Another one is that we set the home’s price, when really it’s the market that does. And people don’t always realize we’re not paid until closing, so every deal takes a lot of upfront work and investment.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m April Tyner, forever entrepreneur & community leader. I embedded myself in the community as Life Doesn’t Succ Plant Shop owner & now I’m making a bigger mark as a successful Realtor in the area. What sets me apart from others in this business is my approachability & adamancy to give my clients the best service that is incomparable to other agents. The April 10 years ago would’ve never thought she’d be where she is now. See, I used to be a completely different person with different goals. Becoming sober & being a single mom, although challenging, opened doors for me I thought were locked. My brand, At Home with April, has become a staple in the area. My firm, Remax Legendary, is the best in the business in the area.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My Meemaw, Gerolynn, knew what potential I had. She knew me before I was sober & saw me as I came to the other side. Her never ending encouragement of my small business Life Doesn’t Succ was never ending but she knew I could make a bigger impact in the community. She encouraged me to reach for the stars & to never settle. I will always be grateful for her expertise, her guidance & most importantly her love.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
I am seven years sober from alcohol & substances. The trauma I endured from age 15-30, my using years I call them, was hard to erase once I was on the other side. I quickly learned, I shall not regret the past, nor shut the door on it. I must learn from my wrongdoings & move FORWARD. Facing your demons is the only way to heal. And that healing, it’s not linear. It’s messy. It’s never ending. New people & situations can bring up old feelings & you must handle them in a new way, sober.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
The version of me at home & in the public eye are no different. I am VERY transparent about my past & why I am who I am today. I believe that if someone hires me, I want them to know the real me. Not the sugar coated fancy branding picture that most people portray to be.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That she never gave up, no matter what. She persisted when it seemed impossible & did it while making every room she walked in light up.
