Emmitt Terrell shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Emmitt, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
I would say integrity. Being consistent in your word and deed is paramount. If you don’t keep your word you don’t have trust. If you don’t have trust you don’t have much! You will lose credibility, trust with your team, and personal relationshps quickly! Energy is big as well. I’m discovering that energy doesn’t lie. If you sense a gut intuition about something: relationship, situation or decision you have to make trust your gut. That intuitive feeling is the rapid summary by your body and brain based on previous experiences both lived and read about. A lot goes into that sensation which is why it feels so powerful!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey y’all! My name is Emmitt Terrell and I am the owner of Level 6 Training. A private fitness studio concept located in downtwon Fuquay Varina North Carolina! At Level 6 our mantra is: “To champion our clients to build the best version of themselves through the vehicle of fitness” We take that credo seriously! Our team works daily to create an atmosphere conducive to success and hard work through inspired action. We are so excited to be working on some new services and refining our core offering to better meet the needs of our clients as they work to achieve their goals!
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I’ve actually been thinking about this question a lot lately. The biggest human influence in my life is my precious 4 and a half year old daughter Callie (I had better say the 1/2 part because she’d correct me if I didnt). When I see the world through her eyes its so magical and amazing and it calls me to think on how we grow, develop and experience through our lifetime! She is so resilient and positive and full of joy, wonder, and curiousity. She asks questions about everything!
She inspires me so much! Sometimes i’ll be sitting with her and she’ll mess up or make a mistake and say “oops! Well, that’s OK” and MAN that is such a wake up call. I think as I’ve grown older ive been less willing to make mistakes or even admit them. I’m guilty of focusing on perfection and beat myself (as I believe many of us do) up so much over mistakes or tiny incompetencies! Wouldn’t it be amazing if all of us adults remembered that it’s OK to make mistakes, admit them, accept responsibility for them and learn from them? I think modern life, leadership, and most especially endeavoring in entrepreneurship can beat that out of you if we’re not careful. My daughter has truly inspired me to reframe mistakes and not get too hung up on them! We’re all only human after all!
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
As someone who has experienced great deals of both in my 34 years on this planet I can say with confidence that suffering is the BEST teacher that exists. If you can bear, and endure the pain and not allow it to wound you so deeply that it affects your heart, your self-worth, your willingness to contribute to your fellow humans that’s where the beauty in pain lies. Life can get really hard. Like really hard. But, if your eyes and mind are open, and sharp you can utilize those insights to grow from your pain! I have suffered mightily in a number of ways (as so many of us reading this have). I would encourage anyone to ask “What is this pain sent to teach me? What can I learn from this: heartbreak, setback or tragedy? This is extraordinarly hard. It requires almost a superhuman sense of purpose and a spirituaally elevated sense of self-awareness and I would even argue some degree of enlightenment (Praise God). But if you ask “What can I learn?” your suffering will never be in vain. Even when it feels like it’s too much to bear.
Success is wonderful but teaches us few lessons in the process it’s more like the comforting joy of all the hard work versus learning in the trenches and trials that life inevitably slings our way.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
This is a tough question! Smart people are amazing. I truly enjoy, especially at this point in my life & career, sitting and conversing with people who are way smarter than me and are truly experts of their craft. It’s such a joy and experience their thoughts and insights. What’s even better is if they’ve been exceptionally gifted with the blessing of communicating that passion and expertise. It is so nice to learn from experts but I think the directionality and the wholeheartedness with which we’ve all collectively embraced AI without the proper speed bumps, safeguards, and protections is potentially disastrous!
Didn’t anyone watch Terminator? All “Skynet” jokes aside, I fully believe the rate at which techinological advancements, particularly with AI’s writing and “communicative” abilities needs to be slowed down. In the wrong hands the implication of this technology could pose an existential threat to developed society at large. While I agree it’s super cool to have the answer to any and all questions right in the palm of your hand. Or a beautifully scripted essay or poem written in moments it all comes at a cost. I think the costs to humanity from such a technology are not yet fully understood and will be mercilessly unveiled to us in the coming decade. Once the alogrithm gets to a certain level will we even need a sales force any more? Or will we lean instead on AI-based assessments of optimal outcomes from business deals and quite literally begin doing business, or even perhaps major war, at the touch of a button based on a computed percentile of outcomes generated by AI! These are terrifying questions but also a call for smart people to begin the necessary work of safeguarding and layered security, particularly with sensitive data!
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Now this is a question again that warrants a lot of thought! First and foremost, I would hope that people would say I was a good man. That I stood for something even when it wasn’t convenient or that it cost me a lot to do so. I hope they see the way that I love and care for my daughter as her father, my family members as both a son and brother, and my closest and dearest friends and my staff. I would hope that they would see the undertaking of effort I put into taking my dreams and turning them into a reality against many setbacks, obstacles, and rapid change and in doing so gave them permission and a “greenlight” to do the very same in their own lives. I truly hope that people say they felt inspired to be healthier, be a better version of themselves, try harder or just be comfortable in their own skin. Most of all I hope they felt loved.
