Jay Hicks shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Jay, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Something I am very proud of is my team and I hosted a back-to-school festival in Durham, North Carolina. Where we raised 400+ book bags and 4,000+ school supplies to help local students prepare for school all for free.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey all, Jay Hicks here! I am currently a freelance photographer, event manager, and artist. I love making music, taking pictures, and putting together shows and events!
I have since pivoted from my fashion brand and am focusing on my music, photography and event coordination. Recently my team and I hosted a back-to-school festival in Durham where we supplied free school supplies to local students in the community. And although we were met with challenges, it was so rewarding seeing everyone smile and express their gratitude. Growing up in the area I’ve always felt a since spirit and energy coming from awake County and to be able to give back to the community that gave so much to me will stick with me forever.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
After graduating college, I had a few things that I had to come to terms with. As most people experience this transition in their mid 20’s, and really learn who they are – one of the leading factors was learning to create boundaries and make time for the people that bring you joy in life and add value to your life.
I had to leave behind the old version of myself who was always available for everyone, which in terms isn’t necessarily a bad thing but not always the most healthy to yourself. It comes with a realization that at the end of the day you have to take care of yourself first in order to be there for others.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
As many entrepreneurs can relate, this lifestyle comes with a lot of high and lows and what I’ve come to realize is that – it’s not about the situation itself but how you respond and that defines your character.
Being at low points and suffering and struggling to make it creates a certain grit that gives you confidence into everything else because it teaches you that no matter how many times you get put down you still get up the next time!
You continue to fight, I am firm believer that if you work towards your goals with clear intentions, you will inevitably reach your goals!
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely, I try to be as transparent as possible. I believe it means much more when you’re able to build a community by being yourself.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am now doing what I was born to do, and that’s inspiring others to just start and don’t care about what others think. Since I’ve started making music, I have felt so free. And that’s because I came to realize that when you speak from the heart that’s truly when you’re able to reach the masses. Although my music hasn’t reached the masses, I know that it will because it coming from the right place.
