Evelyn Wheeler shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Evelyn, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I have taken up painting and doing resin projects. It lets me be creative outside the website business and brings me such joy.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My husband, Chad, and I launched Web Designs Your Way in 2010, and it’s been an incredible journey. With 15 years in the ever-evolving tech field, we’ve witnessed — and adapted to — countless changes in web technology and digital strategy. It’s a truly dynamic and fascinating industry to be a part of.
Our mission is to empower small businesses with an exceptional online presence through stunning, effective websites. We’re passionate about making professional web design accessible, which is why we proudly offer interest-free payment plans. This isn’t about our pricing being high; it’s about our dedication to helping small businesses thrive without being a financial burden.
We’ve had the privilege of building incredible websites and fostering strong relationships with clients across the United States and even in the Bahamas. Our growth is also deeply supported by our customers and the invaluable connections we’ve built with “power partners” – other businesses that share our vision for client success.
Beyond just design, we offer a comprehensive suite of services to ensure our clients’ long-term online success. This includes ongoing website security maintenance, social media strategy, and local SEO services for all the websites we build. Our monthly plans include complimentary hosting when combined with our security maintenance. For clients needing occasional updates, we offer a flexible hourly rate, billed precisely in 15-minute increments. We’re also fully equipped to provide expert support and updates for websites we didn’t originally build.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My dad knew I was a social person and always trying to help others. He kept pushing us to open our own business, and when we finally did, we never looked back. Chad says I am the one who keeps this business going because I am always connecting with people. I feel we are a great team that keeps the business going, because it takes both of us to be successful!
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of what others think of me has always been an obstacle for me. I have always wanted to make everyone happy, and as I age, I have realized that’s just not possible. I have to focus on me being happy in order for others to be happy, so I am trying to adapt that into my every day way of thinking.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I don’t really think it’s that our industry lies to itself, as what our industry tells others.
I always reference a line from The Field of Dreams Movie: “Build it, and they will come.” That does not hold true in the website world. Almost anyone can build a website, but building it correctly is a whole other story. There are so many guidelines you need to follow to make it a successful website. A website is never truly “done.” You need to add content to it to keep it relevant and show Google that you are still in business., along with many other things. Blogging at least monthly is always a good way to help with this.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I thought I was born to take care of animals by being a veterinarian, but found out early on, that was not it. I don’t know if it is actually the web design industry that I was born to be in, but helping others achieve their dreams and goals is what I feel I was put here for.
