Payton Matthews of Rural on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Payton Matthews and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Payton, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I am part work from home mama/photographer. I love the flexibility of this job and what it brings to my family. It allows me to “work” my passion while also being present for my family most of the time. I keep my children during the day and work in the evenings when my husband is home from work or family will help watch them when I go to sessions. I love taking the kids to do fun activities during the day. We do coffee runs, target trips, splash pads, lots of outside time, indoor playgrounds, visits to the grandparents and so much more!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Payton Matthews and I own and run Payton Herring Photography. This business is 8 years old and my first baby. It has grown with me as I have grown through marriage and babies! I love capturing love stories through wedding days and I also enjoy family portraits. I find so much joy in providing my clients with memories to hold on and cherish forever.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My parents instilled a strong work ethic in me from early years when I started school. They taught me that you must work hard to obtain things in this life and boy were they right. They set me up for success by really making sure I understood the importance of hard work. I remember I made money for doing tasks around the the house and it all started at a young age.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I never wanted to disappoint my family. I am a people pleaser by nature and they always wanted me to go to college and be successful. They had always told me getting a great education was important. When I decided college wasn’t the route for me I was worried they would be upset with me. They were for a split second, but now I believe they are very proud.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
College is not for everyone!! I do think people are starting to come around more and more to this idea, but when I quit college it was not common.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What will you regret not doing?
Spending time with my family and kids. I am now at a point in my business where I can really focus more on family than growing my business. It took a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to get to this point!
