Hi Lorna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Sweet Charity Cheesecakes is an inspiration that developed from my love of delighting others with my culinary skills along with my passion for giving back to the community! I made a cheesecake for my husband’s birthday party many years ago and everyone loved it SO MUCH they asked to buy one from me!
We had been trying to figure out what we wanted to do above and beyond our tithing to serve others and, being an entrepreneur at heart added to my joy in making folks happy with my cooking, I talked to my husband about how we could expand this to a business that would “give back” to the community. We have always been involved in community service work so creating Sweet Charity Cheesecakes to fulfill BOTH desires just made sense!
We lovingly make and sell our products and then donate a percentage of the profits to local charities and helping organizations.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting any new company certainly has it’s challenges! As we are not a “store front” (yet), coordinating deliveries and attracting new clients has it own challenges. It has also been a stop and start beginning due to life circumstances that popped up along the way. Because we are a small operation, sourcing resources is also challenging as we don’t always meet minimum requirements for large food vendors.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a full time Owner of two other companies in addition to Sweet Charity Cheesecakes., LLC that have nothing to do with baking! Again, SCC began out of a desire to share our blessings and gifts with others in the community. While we specialize in gourmet cheesecakes (we have over 30 flavors!), we also create scrumptious specialty cakes such as Cannoli Cream Cake, Italian Cream Cakes (Lemon Blueberry, Strawberry, Caramel Pecan, Carrot Cake). We are proud of the work we do in the community as we donate a portion of our earnings to local helping communities. To date, SCC has donated over $3000 to helping organizations in our community such as Healing Transitions, Urban Ministries, and Oak City Cares. We currently provide delivery within Wake County and we offer pick up at a local establishment who we also partner with as they desserts baker (Fratelli’s Deli in Apex).
