We’re looking forward to introducing you to Piragio Thompson . Check out our conversation below.
Piragio, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
A recent moment that I am most proud of is writing and self-publishing two books this year. The first book is called “Breaking the Silence: A Guide on How to Talk to Your Kids about Sex, Drugs, and Alcohol,” and the second book is called Working within the spectrum: A Guide to working with kids with autism and intellectual developmental disabilities.. I am also proud of the fact that I was able to get an article published in NC Newsline on how the mental health system is broken.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Piragio, and I’m a creator and social work professional. I’m passionate about using both style and service to inspire change. I wear a few hats. I’m currently pursuing my Master of Social Work while also building my own brand, which is rooted in creativity, empowerment, and authenticity. What makes my story unique is the blend of worlds I move in: on one side, I work in mental health and social justice, serving communities that are often overlooked, and on the other, I pour my energy into fashion, styling, and storytelling as a way to uplift and express identity.
My brand is about more than clothing; it’s about influence, presence, and inspiring others to step into their power. I want people to feel seen, confident, and capable of leading with purpose when they engage with my work. Right now, I’m in an exciting phase of growth, sharpening my voice, aligning my passions, and building projects that combine creativity, advocacy, and leadership. At the heart of it all, what drives me is the belief that you don’t have to choose between worlds; you can merge them and create something impactful, original, and lasting.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The relationship that has shaped me most is the one with my mentor, Toussaint Holland. He has been in my life since I was eight years old through the “Big Brothers Big Sisters” program and has been there through every major milestone in my life, and has been pivotal in the way that I approach life and my business.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Two defining wounds of my life are losing both my maternal grandmother and great-grandmother, just like my mentor I mentioned earlier, they helped shape the person I am and my work ethic. Their passing left a void, but it also forced me to step into my own strength and carry the lessons they instilled in me: faith, perseverance, and the importance of showing up fully in everything I do. Over time, I’ve transformed that pain into motivation. I’ve healed by turning inward, seeking God for guidance, and channeling those experiences into my work with others. Both losses taught me resilience, empathy, and the power of creating the life and legacy I want.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
That if you really got it, you don’t have to brag about it.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
If I laid down my name, role, and possessions, what would remain is my spirit, my character, my resilience, and the values that have carried me through life. I would still be someone who cares deeply about people, who wants to inspire and create, and who leads with authenticity. Titles, material things, and even recognition can fade, but what stays is the impact I leave on others, the encouragement I give, the way I make people feel seen, and the legacy of perseverance and faith passed down from those who came before me.
