An Inspired Chat with Angela Vittori of Clayton

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Angela Vittori. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Angela, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me is waking up before the sun and heading to my day job as a surgical technologist in the operating room. My job is to assist the surgeon during surgery so I am constantly trying to be one step ahead of the procedure. The biggest part of my job is trying to read the surgeon’s mind and know what they need before they know they need it. It’s high stress and can be very challenging but also extremely rewarding. Once I clock out, I focus on my singer/songwriter life and get geared up for my performances. Sometimes after a 12 hour shift, I head straight to a music venue to perform a show! It’s a little bizarre to think about going from the OR to the stage all in the same day but I honestly love it.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a singer/songwriter based out of Raleigh, North Carolina. I’ve lived here for just over four years now. When I first moved here, I joined a cover band called Hatchback and became their lead singer. We’ve been performing all over the Triangle area as well as several other states. It’s been a lot of fun performing almost every single weekend with the band. I’ve also been able to work on my own original songs and release a few of those which has been amazing. Recently, I’ve been super focused on building my own brand and working on getting my own songs out into the world. So far, it’s been going great and I’m getting a ton of positive feedback and results from these new songs. Truly so so grateful that people are loving my music!

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I would say the earliest moment I can remember would be when I did a NYSSMA solo in middle school. Basically you pick out a song from this book that your chorus teacher gives you and then you sing it in front of three judges. I was 11 or 12 years old at the time and I sang “In My Own Little Corner” and I got a PERFECT score. It might sound silly, but that was such a proud moment for me! It was truly empowering and it made me want to just completely immerse myself in anything music related. I do wish I still had that NYSSMA solo paper with the score and all the comments written by the judges. That would be so cool to have after all these years.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have been plenty of times where I doubted myself for sure. Especially in music because so many people are after the same thing as you. You’re up against so much competition and it can be hard to stand out in all of that. But you know what…I just keep showing up. I keep grinding even when I get discouraged. I keep posting content even when I’m unsure or insecure about it. I keep singing for any opportunity presented to me because I always tell myself that it’s going to pay off eventually. You don’t always know how or when, but it usually always pays off somehow.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Ohhhh yes. I am unapologetically me. What you see is what you get and that’s a blessing and a curse at times. It’s so much easier and more fun to just be yourself with people. I think deep down people crave authenticity because the world has become so fake. It’s refreshing when people can just be themselves and not have to hide or change the real them. But I do have to admit: When it comes to shoes, there IS a public version AND a real version of me. I wear cowboy boots on stage at every single show. It’s become a pretty cool little trademark that I’ve built over the years and I really enjoy how much people love my boot collection. But the second the show is over and I turn off that mic, the REAL me rips off those boots and I put my crocs on. After four hours of dancing and jumping around in boots, I’m sooo ready to be comfy again!

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
The only way to describe it best is how Frank Sinatra sang it: “I did it my way.” I want people to remember that I didn’t do what society expected and I didn’t care what other people said or thought. I lived life the way I wanted to and I never let anything or anyone get in my way. I had dreams and goals and I went after them no matter what. That’s the story I want people to tell. I want them to laugh so hard when they quote me or tell stories about me and then say, “Man, that girl just didn’t care at all. She did and said whatever she wanted. It was awesome.” From a music standpoint, I think it would be remarkable to have my songs listened to well after I’m gone by all the generations after me. That’s just a wild thought that I can’t even comprehend right now!
