Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Kheru DeFontes El

Kheru DeFontes El shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Kheru, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Have you ever been glad you didn’t act fast?
I feel that way in my life right now. I am very grateful I’ve learned to slow down and move more intuitively, without judging myself. It wasn’t easy, came with some lessons. Being from NYC, everything moves fast—especially in business. You’re expected to be in that “New York minute” mindset. I used to always chase being “ahead.” But working for myself has taught me the importance of prioritizing a strong self-care routine. Taking care of yourself isn’t instant—it takes real time and intention.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’ am Kheru DeFontes El. I am from the Bronx…..and I help people shift into the most aligned and empowered version of themselves. The work isn’t always easy—but it’s transformational and deeply rewarding.

My journey began as a doula, then as a midwife’s assistant, supporting people through powerful life transitions. For more than a decade, I’ve studied herbalism across various schools, along with permaculture, Kundalini yoga, and breathwork.

My organization is called *The Healers*, home to *The Healers University* and *The Healers Holistic Clinic*. We’re more than an organization—we’re a community rooted in holistic healing and empowerment, especially for BIPOC individuals who are ready to align mind, body, and soul.

Through holistic counseling, body therapies, spiritual cleansings, herbal education, and culturally grounded healing practices, we help people reconnect with their true selves. Whether it’s through the food you eat, the energy you keep, or the rituals that bring you back to center—we support your transformation from the inside out.

Our mission is to help you feel better, look better, attract aligned relationships, create more abundance, and live with purpose. Healing isn’t just about feeling okay—it’s about unlocking the best version of you.

Right now we are working on ourselves. There is always work to do. We are a community of radical self-care takers or those who inspire to be.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My mom taught me good!! She didn’t just teach me how to work—she showed me what it means to get the job done with intention, strength, and follow-through. She left a lasting impression that still guides how I move today.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?

I stopped hiding my pain when I realized how much it was hurting me. Instead of ignoring it, I started facing it—talking about it, researching, and exploring whether others had stories like mine and what they did to heal. That process helped me turn my pain into power. It taught me how to understand myself on a deeper level—my story, its meanings, the lessons, and even the blessings hidden within it. That’s how real self-mastery begins.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?

My friends would say what matters most to me is you doing your personal work—making the hard life decisions, facing what needs to be faced. Don’t come around with the same problem for five years straight. I’m about growth.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?

Yes, I’ve definitely overcome the need for external validation. I’ve learned to give my best, even when no one’s clapping.
