Jessenia Mills of Raleigh on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Jessenia Mills and have shared our conversation below.

Jessenia, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I once wrestled with the idea of fame. I wanted people to hear my voice, yet I feared what it meant to step fully into the spotlight. This past Spring, I went through a dark period of questioning my direction, knowing deep down what I was meant to do but feeling afraid to rise to it. I reflect on this in my new release, “ZION”. What changed for me was realizing how music itself makes me feel: Each time I leave the studio, I carry with me a sense of lightness and joy that stays with me long after. That feeling is deeply personal, and it showed me that my path isn’t about fame—it’s about letting that light spill over and reach others through the music I create.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jessenia Mills and I am a Singer-Songwriter, Actress and Producer.
I’d say my music is all about storytelling and emotion. I love creating songs that feel cinematic but still deeply personal. My voice has always been my way of carrying both strength and vulnerability, and I want people to feel that balance when they hear me. My latest single, “ZION,” is really special to me. It’s about being afraid of heights, which for me became this metaphor for being afraid of achieving greatness because of the fear of falling or failing. I think a lot of us wrestle with that tension—the desire to rise but the fear that comes with it—and I wanted to capture that in a song that feels both honest and uplifting. But I don’t just want to make music; I want to use my platform to give back. One of my biggest goals is to launch a nonprofit School of Arts that supports underprivileged creatives. Growing up, I saw how important it is to have access to mentorship and opportunities, and I want to create a space where voices that are often unheard can be nurtured and amplified. I write and sing my own songs, direct and produce, and create my own music videos because I like to shape the whole vision of my art. My influences range from Alternative Pop to Contemporary R&B, but at the core it’s always about honesty—lyrics that feel real and performances that connect. For me, music isn’t just sound, it’s healing and inspiring others to keep reaching, even when it’s scary.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I think dishonesty really breaks people apart. When we hide the truth—whether it’s how we feel or what we’ve been through—it creates this false sense of connection, or sometimes destroys it completely. What restores bonds, for me, is openness and the willingness to truly understand each other. There is power in being raw and unfiltered, in showing our true selves. Creating music gives me the space to be vulnerable and honest, while offering that same safe space to others. Music embodies this exchange—it is a diverse yet universal language, made of vibrations and energy, that connects us in ways words alone cannot.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me the value of life in a way success never could. It humbled me and made me realize that my world isn’t everyone else’s world. I can be a hero in one person’s story and a villain in another’s. You really learn who you are when you’re backed into a corner, with nowhere and no one to turn to but yourself. In those moments, suffering becomes more than pain—it becomes a gift—a tool that shapes resilience, perspective, and the kind of success that truly matters.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I used to hold tightly to the belief that you could achieve anything you put your mind to. Over time, I realized that life is rarely that simple. Luck, timing, and connections often play a role, and sometimes we must learn to navigate the cards we are dealt. What we desire isn’t always what is truly meant for us. It is through our personal journeys and the trials we face that we come to understand what is genuinely ours to pursue.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What light inside you have you been dimming?
For years, I dimmed my own confidence, afraid that embracing my abilities would make me seem conceited. But I’ve learned that darkness thrives where light is hidden, and my light is not meant to be hidden. Music has shown me this—it’s how I express, share, and spread my inner brightness. I’ve chosen to put on my armor and fight for that light, letting it guide me and hopefully illuminate the way for others. To anyone reading this: The light you carry is yours. Embrace it, nurture it, and let it shine through whatever you do. Life will test you, push you to the edge- Leap. You may discover wings you never knew you had—and in doing so, inspire someone else to take flight as well.
