We recently had the chance to connect with Paul Barnette and have shared our conversation below.
Paul, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Spending time with my son. Nothing makes me happier than hanging out with him and watching him grow as a child. He’s 4 and I’m trying to soak up every second I can before he starts kindergarten next year, when I know there won’t be as much time together with work and school. But being his dad is the absolute best!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Paul, Owner of Gnarly Pelican Surf Co. were a family surf apparel brand as well as handmade balance surfboards that I make. I’m a full time Firefighter and it’s the best job in the world. It’s been a dream of mine to own a surf shop and one day I hope to make that a reality but until then we’re just doing the online thing and pop-ups!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That I was invincible and time went by in slow motion. I now know that neither are correct. Having the job I have has really showed me that no one can be invincible and to really slow down and enjoy every moment of life, especially now that I have a son. In my full-time job I’ve seen the best and the absolute worst life has to offer so it really makes you realize life is so fragile while being priceless. To take in every second you can to enjoy it, because time slips by so quickly as you age and you really have to enjoy and cherish life.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Take the chance, don’t think twice on something you want. I use to dwell on everything I wanted and could never just go for it without hesitation and over thinking things cause me undue stress and missing out on things that would have brought joy or help me later in life.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Family. Family is my driving factor for everything. My son, Wife, brother, sister, and parents all mean the world to me and I just enjoy being with them all
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
Sitting by the ocean, listening to the rhythm of the waves. Doesn’t matter if I’m going out for a quick surf session, fishing, or just reading a book while my son builds a sand castle. Nothing eases my mind like being next to our wonderful ocean. The sea cures all!
