Nathan Phillips of Winston-Salem on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Nathan Phillips and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Nathan, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I think one of the biggest things people secretly struggle with, but rarely admit, is the fact that no one really has it all figured out.

Sure, we’ve got people we admire, mentors we learn from, role models we look up to…..but at the end of the day, even those “greats” are just doing their best to put one foot in front of the other and figure it out as they go.

That’s such a common misconception, and honestly, it’s a little sad. It’s why I try so hard to be real and genuine….to just own my mistakes and let people see that it’s not all rainbows and butterflies.

I’ve found that when people see someone who’s achieved a certain level of success……whether that’s in business, sports, family, or anything else…..they start to assume that person has it all together. And truthfully, I’ve been guilty of this too.

But the truth that I’ve found? It usually just becomes a more organized mess, haha. You’re still guessing, just a bit more strategically this time.

The only real difference I think is experience. You’ve fallen enough times to know how to land better.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Nathan Phillips, a Realtor with eXp Realty and the founder of Find Triad Homes Now. I help families all across the country buy and sell homes through a “Zero Pressure, Real Guidance” approach.

I’ve built my brand just on the core belief of leading and guiding people with education and information…..my personal mantra is that when people have good information, they make good decisions.

At the end of the day, I’m just passionate about helping people find clarity……..whether that’s in buying a home, growing their business, or just building a better life in general.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
That would 100% be my wife, haha.

She still does. We’ve been married for almost 10 years now and I’ll be talking about doing something, or have done something and am just totally surprised by the outcome…..and her favorite line to quote me is “The only one surprised here is you.”

She definitely saw through some things about me a long time ago before I ever did…..and continues to see, and support all areas of my life every day.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Just breathe kid.

When I was younger, I dealt with a lot of insecurities, fears, anxieties….all the things of growing up and just trying to figure yourself out I guess.

I’m at a point in life now where I feel pretty content, and truthfully I never thought I would be at that place.

Being here now though, if I could go back, I would tell pretty much all the versions of my younger self to just relax. Breathe. It will work out and everything you’re pushing for will all be worth it.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
“My business is bad because of (fill in the blank).”

It’s crazy. I can’t tell you how many other Realtors I talk to that blame the housing market, their agency, the government, for their business struggling right now….I mean the list goes on……they blame everyone and everything BUT themselves. I do some coaching for other agents and have at least two Zoom calls every week now where that is the start of the conversation.

The truth is though, it’s none of that.

My business coach/mentor taught me something that I have taken to heart and will use for the rest of my life…….only YOU dictate YOUR success.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
That’s a tough question to answer, haha.

I think you get increasingly better at this, especially in a business like real estate. I mean, we’re in an industry where the conversion rate from talking to someone to a closed deal is 1-3%…..for those of you that math isn’t your strong suit, what that means is that even at the TOP of your game, you will still be rejected NINETY-SEVEN times, and only walk away with three wins.

It’s tough to keep pushing and giving it your all when you’re facing those odds, but it definitely builds resilience, haha.
