Story & Lesson Highlights with Destiny Newby of Rocky Mount

Destiny Newby shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Destiny, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
Sometimes people forget to separate the artist from the actual person. I have a song titled “Sneaky Link” which in a nutshell is about having sexual relations with a person you aren’t officially dating or seeing and them falling in love with you. People hear that song and think I’m just the freakiest person. Some guys assume I’m down to have casual sex which in fact I am not. Lol. Sneaky Link was a formula that worked. The term was popular and it’s the truth. A lot of people have sneaky links who get attached that’s why everyone can relate. On the other hand everyone assumes it was a true story about someone when in reality I just got really good at song writing.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello, I go by Big Cindy, formerly known as Jacinda. I am a recording rap artist and performer from Wilson, North Carolina. I’ve been taking music serious as an artist since 2019 when I released my 3rd EP New Girl part 2. I released music before 2019 but during that time I only considered music as a hobby. I’ve been a musician since the 4th grade. I was in concert and marching band until my senior year of high school. I played the flute. My religious background is where my roots for music was found, my entire intermediate family plays at least one instrument or can sing.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was when I was in the gospel choir for the elementary school I was attending. We had traveled to Raleigh to sing at a church. The director, Mr. Paul Atlas who was also my first band teacher was very anointed. When we sang it sounded like heaven had opened up. People in the audience were crying during our performance. Thanking us afterwards. We were so young I was like 6, I couldn’t believe we could make adults feel so happy with emotion. It felt good.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me who my real friends and family were. It taught me my fears and what I needed to improve on. It built character and made me who I am. My suffering taught me I deserved to succeed.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
It’s the version I created of myself that I wish I could sometimes be all the time. So yes and no. The public version is like my Sun sign (if you’re into astrology.) It’s the side I want you to see. The side I romanticize. The real me is just that, the real me. I’m still the same but much more quiet, and human. Is anyone really who they are in public?

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I deeply understand that this world is only temporary. I try not to get too caught up in the world. But I am human. I understand we’re here to serve a purpose. I understand that everyone has their own spiritual journey they must travel. I understand relationships are temporary especially on this realm. I understand there is more than what we were taught.
