We recently had the chance to connect with Dr. Constance and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Constance, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
On July 21st I became a first time mom. I haven’t gone back to work yet but will soon so I have been trying to get “battle ready”. When I first wake up I check on the baby and change her diaper, prepare her for the weather and load her into the stroller for a walk/run outside. Once I get back to the house I use a stretch to cool down then take a shower and get dressed for the day. Soon that routine will include packing my breakfast and lunch to-go before heading to work. Not very exciting but these first 90 minutes definitely set the tone for my day.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello CanvasRebel readers! I’m Dr. Constance. I am a board certified family medicine physician and my business, Beyond Clinic Walls Wellness, focuses on health and wellness keynotes as well as custom wellness workshops. In my clinical practice, I empower patients to live holistically and that way of thinking is carried over into the content I deliver for Beyond Clinic Walls Wellness.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
This is probably a common answer but my mother taught me the most about work . It started with helping me with a script for answering the phone politely. I remember being so anxious about it, especially if I had to call her job, but she provided me with a script to give me confidence. She also encouraged me to seek out new experiences and challenge myself. I remember when I aged out of being a camper and was asked to become a counselor I was reluctant but my mom supported me and it helped me find my creative side while developing my leadership skills.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I can’t say that I’ve almost given up but I have had moments of self doubt. Surviving medical school and making the decision to start a business were not easy but I am determined to do my part to make my wildest dreams come true. It is important to me that people young and old alike see professionals who not only look like them but have shared values, beliefs and experiences.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lie that the health and wellness industry tells is “all you have to do is”. Medical professionals., trainers and influencers often present healthy living as a series of checklists and that if you follow the list everything will be fine. If life were that simple I would not have a j0b! But seriously, getting and staying healthy is complicated and often requires a multidisciplinary approach with lots of support.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Currently I am laying the foundation for a fruitful future for myself and my family. My clinical work, business and service in the Navy Reserve are all strategic to create a legacy that I can be proud of. Through my efforts not only will I gain financial security but develop lasting relationships that will enhance all that I do.
