We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dana Holliday. Check out our conversation below.
Dana, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Sisters of Hope! Created in 2023 by Nancy Leisure, SOH is a non-profit Womens support group. We mentor women in many aspects:
Physical and Mental Health
Overcoming Abuse (Sexual, Drug)
Wellness, Finances, and Work-Life Balance
Family Relationships and Moving Forward
We visit a local prison twice a month to work with those women. Our biggest goal is to have a Transitional Home for women coming out of prison to help them adjust to being back in the real world and being whole.
I love my art but needed to know I could make a difference in the world. I have done one art class at the prison and hope to do more in the future.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an artist and Encaustic wax has been my main form of art for the last 10 years. I have studied Encaustic wax in Mexico and Ireland to enhance my skills. And because I love to travel! Sharing my knowledge of encaustic wax to others is a passion and I have several workshops a year. Last year American Leather furniture bought one of my collections and hired me for 2 markets to do live interavctive demonstrations during Spring and Fall Markets. What fun!
I like to think of myself as if Bob Ross and Richard Simmons had a baby!
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My relationship with my father taught me that I am loving and that to share that with others. Learning that all people need love and a simple smile can change a situation has been a great tool for me. Whether I am teaching an Encaustic wax class or mentoring in prison I channel that. Bold and beautiful.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Right after my 5oth birthday my husband left me with and email! It was the best thing that ever happened! After sulking and lots of pity parties I realized that this is my life and had so much more to do other than give up. I hired a Life Coach to help me focus on what my direction might be. That next year was amazing! Starting with teaching a group of women at a half way house how to paint and faux finish and then writing a grant that led me to San Miguel to learn Encaustic wax.
Once again serving others always grounds me.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
What you see is what you get! I really believe in authenticity. Whether I am at a high end soiree, teaching a class, or mentoring in prison that’s Dana. I don’t care for pretention and have to be really careful not to judge others for that quality.
One of my favorite stories is the time I was filthy in my overalls painting a 30′ mural and went to a friends flower shop to use the facilities. His assistant didn’t know who I was. Very nasty reception there! A few days later he brought her out to meet me and she freaked when she realized how rude she had been. I just smiled.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I cared. I care how you want your art commision to look like. I care about our community. I care how you feel about what’s going on in our World. I may not agree but I want to know your feelings and I care.
