Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Bottinelli.
Hi Sandra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been a painter for 30 years now. I opened my first gallery in the River Arts District 14 years ago. I was first in the Wedge Studios on the second floor in what I called WhiteSPACE and then I moved to Riverview Station on the first floor, calling the gallery Modern Muse. This second space was destroyed completely by 23 feet of water as a result of Hurricane Helene. I just recently opened my new gallery, Bottinelli Fine Art now located in the center of the Arts District. I house 5 working artists including myself and 3 display artists that do not work in the space.
I started as a child, drawing, painting, coloring and sculpting. I never stopped and that is how I got to where I am today. Art is my life and everything in life is art so it worked out well for me! There have been struggles of course but that goes with anything so I am very happy that I chose this path because it is really what I love to do.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road. The biggest struggle would have to be the Hurricane.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in abstract expressionism if you can call it that. I like to think my work cannot be categorized since it is it’s own thing. My subject matter circles around animals and abstracts. I switch from one to the other and often combine the two.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love Asheville’s small town feel in a bigger city. I am a city girl at heart so it gives me a taste of it without being too overwhelming. What I like least is that it’s not a big city. haha. Never satisfied.
