Meet Catherine Hale of Raleigh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Catherine Hale.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was originally a music therapist working at the Austin State Hospital but I decided to stay home with my new baby at the time. While taking him to Music Together classes at Heartsong Music in Austin, TX, I fell in love with the Music Together program and decided to get my teacher training, knowing I already had the musical skills to be able to lead classes. I taught for a year in Austin and then moved to Raleigh in 2010. I opened my own Music Together Center called, Sproutsongs Music in Raleigh in January of 2011 and have been teaching and directing there ever since. I now have 6 teachers on staff and we will be celebrating our 15 year anniversary at the end of this year.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Sproutsongs Music was flourishing with 8 teachers and 4 locations in early 2020 and then Covid hit. Unfortunately we had to close our physical doors and go online for a year, offering virtual Music Together classes. We then moved our classes outside for a year and finally moved back inside with masks and spacing. We have been offering our normal classes for a while now and have rebuilt our center with new locations and a few new teachers.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a board-certified Music Therapist with dual degrees in Music Therapy and Orchestral Performance from Arizona State University. I received my certification level 2 certificate from Music Together and have been teaching Music Together for 17 years. I teach piano lessons at my private studio during the week and enjoy playing my French horn with my horn quartet called Oak City Hornsound. I am most proud of building a loving music community in Raleigh, having provided classes to over 4,380 students.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Our success is due to great teaching, being open minded, and being consistent, reliable, and loving.
