Inspiring Conversations with Cherrelle Davis of Becoming Counseling PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cherrelle Davis.

Hi Cherrelle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started working in the mental health field in 2010. I was in graduate school but also working full time. A fellow student told me about a job at a local eating disorder hospital that provided meals to staff free of charge and I decided to take a position. That introduction to the eating disorder field was the start of my now 10 plus year career helping people with eating disorders. I now specialize in working with people of color with eating disorders. I started my own private practice in 2020 after working in the hospital 7 years.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not! It was such a leap of faith to start my own practice. I actually never saw my self doing clinical work full time, so being a business owner allows me the ability to wear multiple hats. What started as an individual endeavor is now a group practice, so I wear many more hats than I used to. Although my ADHD brain loves the novelty of several tasks, it can also be a challenge to manage clinical concerns, administrative tasks, and business items all while being a wife and mother. It was a huge financial risk to start a practice where the revenue was directly correlated to the amount of clients I serviced. I’ve since learned to diversify my income. It’s also been a challenge to select the right people to be a part of my team. I feel honored to work with my current team and do not take it lightly that they’ve entrusted me to lead.

As you know, we’re big fans of Becoming Counseling PLLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business is a behavioral health private practice located in Durham, pretty close to Duke University. We treat adults for mental health concerns ranging from anxiety and depression to relational concerns. My specialty is eating disorder and body image concerns in minority populations, especially black women. I am one of few black clinicians in North Carolina who hold the Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS) designation which signifies over 5000 hours of work in the eating disorder field. I am also currently the president of the NC Chapter of the international association of eating disorder professionals (iaedp). I am proud to have achieved this designation and to continue bringing awareness to black women with eating issues. I love being a voice for the underserved and often jump at the opportunity to speak and advocate.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck is hilarious. I’ve never been a believer in luck. But I am a believer in favor (blame my Christian upbringing) and I’ve definitely had favor and Gods grace covering my life. There are just some things I cannot credit to myself. I have a very strong work ethic but have had so many doors opened that I cannot explain. I’ve also had some very kind people to encourage me and the best support system. By husband is my biggest fan.
