Daily Inspiration: Meet Dr. Corbin Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Corbin Smith.

Hi Dr. Corbin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began my acting career as an actor in the HBO series “The Wire” in my hometown of Baltimore, MD. After that, I attended Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida, where I earned a Master of Science in Entertainment Business, a Bachelor of Science in Music Business, and an Associate of Science in Recording Arts. Following graduation, I worked for Radio One Baltimore for seven years in their Promotions and Marketing Department. During a Radio One event, I had an epiphany and decided to transition into the nonprofit sector, specifically focusing on workforce development. I signed up to serve as an AmeriCorps member with Civic Works Inc. After completing my service, Civic Works hired me as a full-time staff member. I spent five years there, holding multiple roles such as Program Supervisor, Senior Case Manager, and Assistant Program Director.

When COVID-19 hit, I was laid off. I then decided to open my own recording studio shortly after earning my Doctorate in Business Administration from Trident University International. I took a three-month contract with the Maryland Department of Labor to support my investment in the studio. After operating the studio, I applied for the position of Executive Director with the 100 Black Men of Triangle East, becoming their first-ever appointee.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey I’ve been on has been far from smooth. To begin with, I faced an unexpected layoff during the COVID-19 pandemic, which turned my world upside down. The stability I had relied on vanished overnight, leaving me anxious about my future. Furthermore, the recording studio I envisioned as a vibrant hub for creativity and collaboration has not developed as I had anticipated. Despite my passion and dedication, I struggled to attract clients and generate revenue. Meanwhile, the bills kept piling up, creating a relentless financial burden. This challenging period has tested my resilience, prompting me to reassess my goals and explore new strategies for navigating these difficult times.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As the Executive Director of the 100 Black Men of Triangle East, I am passionately dedicated to promoting youth workforce development initiatives that empower individuals and uplift our community. Being one of the first in my family to earn a doctoral degree fills me with pride and reflects my unwavering commitment to education and personal growth.

My journey has equipped me with a unique ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, allowing me to forge strong relationships and foster collaboration among varied groups. This skill not only enhances our programs but also cultivates an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and heard. Through my work, I strive to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those we serve and to contribute to the collective advancement of our community.

How do you think about happiness?
I experience a deep sense of happiness when I can clearly see the impact of my labor. The results of my hard work serve as a powerful reminder of what I can achieve, fueling my motivation and inspiring me to continuously strive for new heights in everything I pursue.
