Today we’d like to introduce you to David Young.
Hi David, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My passion for aviation began at a young age. Growing up, my grandfather was a pilot, and I was fortunate to be surrounded by aviation throughout my life. In 2013, I became a police officer with the Greensboro Police Department in North Carolina, where I served in patrol, as a community resource officer, and later as a violent crimes detective. During my time in law enforcement, I discovered a way to combine my love for aviation with policing through the use of small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS).
This passion led me to start Public Safety UAS (PSU). What began as a small, niche side business—intended to supplement my income and reduce the need for extra shifts—quickly grew beyond anything I expected. By 2023, PSU had expanded so significantly across the country that I made the difficult decision to resign from the Greensboro Police Department and dedicate myself fully to growing the company.
Today, while still serving as a reserve officer with the Graham Police Department, my team and I have proudly built PSU and Unmanned Safety Solutions into the largest public safety drone training company in North America. Our courses span from Canada to Taiwan, and from South Dakota to Boston. As a team, we face every challenge with dedication and humility, united by our mission to build safer communities through the power of aviation technology.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Building a business is never a smooth road. There have been highs and lows, late nights, early mornings, and countless cups of coffee along the way. But I wouldn’t change it for the world. Every challenge has been part of the journey. The greatest lesson I’ve learned is the importance of believing in your team, being willing to admit what you don’t know, and surrounding yourself with the right people in the right positions to ensure collective success.

There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the look on a public safety professional’s face when they witness the capabilities of HALO. Hearing their success stories after we’ve assisted them, and knowing that we are truly making a difference in public safety and their community, is what drives our team every day.
