Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanika Staton.
Hi Shanika, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It all started at the young age of 10 when I started to style my own hair, and braid my dolls hair, at the age of 12 I showed one of my younger cousin how to braid to the scalp(cornrow). By the age of 15 I had worn almost every style on my head that I could do on my own. After high school I tried other career paths but none of them interested me like cosmetology. Once I finished college and got my license I worked in a salon on commission basis for about a year and a half then went into a booth renting salon.. booth renting was good but my ideas for a the salon did not fit with where I was so I opened up in a building of my own where I got to know a lot is other small business owners and network with other businesses in my area. After a year of operation I had to close down the building due to the lack of funding to my business. Now I am back to booth rental where I can be a little more free when it comes to my family.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No it has not always been easy..
After graduation from college I lost my full time job, my 1st booth renting salon said they where closing down while I was in my maternity leave with my 1st child, had to close down my salon due to the lack of funding for my business.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
In the industry of hair, a healthy scalp and ph balanced hair is very important. What you eat, drink, and the lifestyle you live impact the health and wellness of your hair, scalp, and skin. For my life my children and family is what matters and why I continue to reach new heights.
