Hi, I’m Christian Humphrey, 16 year African American, and the founder of Silky Athletic Wraps.
When I started my fitness journey, I was immediately hit with two problems. First, I was grossed out. I realized how much gym equipment exposed me to germs and sweat I didn’t want anywhere near my face or hair.
Second, all that sweat and friction was destroying the one thing that gave me confidence: my hair.
Growing up, I was teased for my weight, and my hair was the only thing that made me feel like myself. Later, after my parents separated, I had to learn to do it all on my own—hours of work just to have it ruined by a dirty, rough gym bench. I felt like I was being forced to choose between my fitness and my confidence.
I refused to compromise.
I started by bringing a silk pillowcase to the gym. It was my simple solution: it kept my head off the grime, and it protected my hair. That simple idea sparked something bigger.

No, it has been anything but a smooth road. Starting this business has been a constant battle, filled with obstacles I never could have anticipated.
As a 16-year-old entrepreneur, I was driven by a clear idea but had no map for what I was truly getting into. Every single step was a new challenge: navigating the complexities of patents, finding and vetting manufacturers, building the product from scratch, and then figuring out how to market it to the right audience.
It has been a fight for every inch of progress, but I was and am determined to make this work, no matter what.
