Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristian Silva.
Hi Cristian, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up as the oldest son, I watched my parents work tirelessly at their 9-to-5 jobs, often having to limit what the family could afford. Their hard work inspired me — but it also motivated me to take a different path. I always dreamed of building something of my own: a business that could create opportunities for others and grow into something lasting.
After high school, I faced an important choice. Instead of taking on a huge college loan, I decided to invest in building a business that would also create jobs for my community but I was unsure on what kind of business i should start. I began working in fast food and later joined the Harris Teeter Distribution Center in 2013. The job provided stability and a better quality of life, but it was physically demanding. Even while working long hours, But i never stopped planning for my future.
In 2021, I founded GDS Lawn Care & Landscaping as a side hustle, using my job at Harris Teeter to help fund my dream. Each year brought growth, experience, and new opportunities. By 2025, I made the life-changing decision to leave my full-time job and dedicate myself completely to my business.
What started with basic lawn maintenance has now grown into a thriving company offering professional landscaping, hardscaping, stone retaining walls, paver patios, firepits, and 3D outdoor design services. With a team of four dedicated workers, GDS proudly serves Greensboro and the surrounding areas, helping homeowners bring their outdoor visions to life.
My journey reflects resilience, ambition, and gratitude for my family’s sacrifices and never forgetting where i came from. My ultimate goal is clear — to grow GDS Lawn Care & Landscaping into the biggest landscaping company in the state of North Carolina.
What began as one man’s side hustle has become a story of determination, growth, and the pursuit of the American dream — one yard at a time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There has been big financial losses along the way but I have always gotten up and kept trying

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Finding the right mentor or building a strong network starts with surrounding yourself with people who are where you want to be. For me, that meant learning from other local business owners and contractors who had more experience in landscaping and construction. I asked questions, listened, and wasn’t afraid to start small or make mistakes.
Networking has worked best for me through word of mouth and genuine relationships. I’ve built strong connections by always doing quality work and treating every client with respect — because satisfied customers often become your best promoters. Social media has also been a powerful tool for growing my business and connecting with other professionals in the industry.
My advice is simple: be humble, stay curious, and keep learning. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people who inspire you — many successful business owners are willing to share advice if they see your passion and drive. Most importantly, stay consistent and never stop investing in your growth.
