Meet Colleen Bergren of Wake Forest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Colleen Bergren.

Colleen , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve spent nearly 20 years in the helping professions, always drawn to roles that center around support, service, and connection. Throughout that time, my path hasn’t been linear—there were personal and life hurdles along the way that, at times, derailed my original goals or slowed my progress. But those experiences also deepened my empathy, strengthened my resilience, and reaffirmed my commitment to this field. After completing rigorous clinical training and education, I became a clinician about five years ago. Now, after years of growth—both personally and professionally—I’m stepping into solo private practice. It feels like the culmination of everything I’ve worked toward: bringing together my experience, perspective, and the drive to both serve and mentor others while working for myself.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, and I think that’s part of what has shaped me as a professional and as a person. Over the years, I’ve experienced significant personal losses, including the passing of both of my parents, which was incredibly difficult to navigate while continuing to work and grow in my career. Professionally, I’ve faced challenges like job loss and the loss of a supervisor, which directly affected my hours and stability at times. On top of that, becoming a mother added a whole new layer of responsibility and perspective, requiring me to constantly balance my personal and professional life. Each of these struggles was challenging in the moment, but they also taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of empathy—qualities that I now bring to my work with clients and to my emerging private practice.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work centers on supporting individuals and families through life’s challenges, helping them build coping skills, set boundaries, and gain clarity in their lives. I specialize in providing compassionate, client-centered care, often working with people navigating significant life transitions, grief, or stressors. What I’m known for is meeting people where they are—drawing on nearly 20 years in the helping professions and my own life experiences, including parental losses, job and supervisor changes, and becoming a mother—to truly understand the complexities of resilience and growth.

I’m most proud of guiding clients through transformative moments and helping them feel empowered to take control of their lives. What sets me apart is the combination of extensive professional experience, personal insight, and a genuine drive to mentor and support others while creating an environment where clients feel deeply seen, heard, and understood. My approach is summed up by my business motto: Heal, Grow, and Drive On—because I believe in helping people heal from the past, grow into their full potential, and keep moving forward with purpose. I’m now bringing all of that into my solo private practice, which feels like the culmination of both my professional training and life journey.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories is going to the visiting circus with my father. I remember the excitement of the lights, the music, and all the performers—it felt magical. What made it really special, though, was experiencing it with him. It was a time of pure joy and wonder, and it’s a memory that has always stayed with me because it was about connection, shared laughter, and feeling completely present in the moment.
