Community Highlights: Meet Sushrusha Arjyal MD of Bliss Sleep and PSychiatry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sushrusha Arjyal MD.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in the beautiful country of Nepal. After completing medical school, I came to the United States in 2008 with big dreams and just a few hundred dollars in my pocket. After years of tests and training, including a one-year fellowship in Sleep Medicine, I graduated as a board-certified Sleep specialist and Psychiatrist.

I had the opportunity to be hired and promoted as an Assistant Professor in a prestigious organization like Duke University, where I was able to both teach and learn before deciding to open my own practice and become an entrepreneur in 2024. Currently, I am the owner and CEO of Bliss Sleep and Psychiatry in Cary, NC.

Throughout my journey, I have met truly wonderful people who have inspired, encouraged, and helped me in every possible way. Now, given where I am, I strive to do the same for others.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a first-generation immigrant, I faced certain challenges starting a new life in a completely different country. Having very little social support nearby made the transition even more difficult. Of course, financial hardships in the beginning were also tough.

Being a physician in the United States requires years of rigorous training. After completing this training, we must pass multiple levels of exams before becoming certified and allowed to practice.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m a physician (MD) board-certified in both Psychiatry and Sleep Medicine, as well as a Harvard-trained Life Coach. My passion lies in helping people achieve balance through better sleep and improved mental health. In my locality I am known as an expert in psychiatric disorders affecting sleep patterns.

In my practice, I care for individuals struggling with a range of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and substance use disorders. I also specialize in treating sleep-related conditions such as insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, sleepwalking, and challenges with reducing sedative or benzodiazepine use. My clinic offers comprehensive clinical evaluations and sleep studies to help patients get to the root of their sleep difficulties.

There are fewer than ten physicians in North Carolina who are board-certified in both psychiatry and sleep medicine, which allows my clinic to offer truly specialized and personalized care. I take great pride in focusing on the whole person—not just medication management—but overall well-being.

For mental health care, I see patients aged 18 and older, and for sleep-related concerns, I see patients aged 5 and up. We offer both in-person and virtual appointments to make care as accessible as possible. Because I believe in quality over quantity, I intentionally keep a smaller patient panel so I can devote more time and attention for providing personalized care to my clients.

In addition to medical treatment, I use my coaching background to guide patients in making meaningful lifestyle changes that support better sleep, improved mood, and a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
For anyone struggling to find a mentor, I would suggest being proactive—reach out to people without waiting for them to reach out to you. In-person networking events are just as important as digital networking. While connecting online can be more cost-effective and time-efficient, meeting people face-to-face often helps build stronger and more meaningful relationships.
Remember, most people are also looking for connection and support, just like you. Taking that first step and reaching out with genuine energy can make a big difference.
I consider myself a people person—I truly enjoy meeting new people and building connections. Networking has always come naturally to me and has opened many doors throughout my journey. I love sharing my story and, just as importantly, listening to others share theirs. It’s an honor to be part of someone else’s journey and to learn from their experiences along the way.
