Life & Work with Day Coker of Greensboro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Day Coker.

Hi Day, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got started in the Hvac industry back in 2010 after deciding not to go to law school. A local Greensboro company took a chance on me and trained me as a maintenance technician. From that point on I knew this field would be my career. It took years of learning from mentors and studying to become who I am today. Now I take that knowledge and experience with me to encourage other females to embark on the hvac journey.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve been blessed to have encountered several male mentors who saw my determination and dedication to the field. They were instrumental in helping become a better technician and business person.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a female owned and operated business. I’m the technician, installer, accountant, salesperson and teacher. Most days I’m the face of the company as well as the customer service representative. Taking care of my customers includes scheduling maintenance and repair calls, preventive maintenance or system installs. Most weeks I work 40-60hrs to make sure I get everyone taken care of.

That attention to customer needs has carried my reputation a long way. Most of my business advertising is through word of mouth. If you take care of your customers, your customers will take care of you.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Take care of your mental and physical health. This industry is not for everyone and your body can only take so much so be kind to it.

Not all jobs are good jobs. It’s okay to say no and walk away.
