Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Anixter.
Hi Emily, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was fortunate to be exposed to photography and the arts at a very young age. I grew up around creative, curious minds and found a love for photography through film and darkroom work early on, sparking a lasting fascination with the process of capturing photographs.
For a long time, photography lived quietly in the background of my life. I explored many other paths and careers, but that pull toward storytelling and documentation never fully disappeared. It wasn’t until I became a parent that everything shifted. Experiencing how fleeting and profound moments truly are gave me a new perspective and clarity about what mattered to me creatively.
From there, photography became more than an interest—it became a way to preserve connection, emotion, and legacy. Today, my work is rooted in intentional storytelling, honest moments and the strength we all hold.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like many creative paths, mine hasn’t been linear. One of the biggest challenges has been learning to trust my voice and step into work that is both deeply personal and emotionally demanding, after spending years focused on other responsibilities. Balancing creativity, family, and the vulnerability that comes with documenting intimate moments required me to develop strong boundaries and self-trust. Navigating self-doubt while building a sustainable creative practice was challenging, but those struggles ultimately shaped the intention, presence, and care that define my work today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work centers on intentional photography that honors the moments and the stories with honesty and connection. I strive to focus on authenticity rather than performance; with an observant approach that provides peace and allows people to feel seen, safe, and respected in front of the camera.
What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me during deeply vulnerable moments. Creating space where women feel empowered, grounded, and fully themselves is at the heart of everything I do. I don’t aim to direct or alter the experience; instead, I bear witness to it, preserving moments as they naturally unfold.
What sets my work apart is presence. I approach each story with emotional awareness, intention, and deep respect for personal boundaries. My background, life experience, and long relationship with the craft allow me to move quietly and intuitively—capturing images that feel not only visually meaningful, but deeply connected.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up surrounded by creativity and strong, thoughtful people. Alongside that, I experienced medical complications early in life, which shaped my awareness of vulnerability, resilience, and the value of being truly seen. Those early experiences quietly informed the way I observe, listen, and approach storytelling today.
