Today we’d like to introduce you to Janet Leary-Carnell.
Hi Janet, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After working for physical therapists and chiropractors as an office assistant I decided to embark on a career where I could help clients more than by answering their questions about their health insurance and scheduling appointments. I decided to enroll at the Carolina Massage Institute in Hillsborough, NC where I earned my massage therapy license in February 2021. I found the coursework to be fascinating and haven’t stopped learning yet! What began as learning the basics of massage has evolved into an extremely rewarding career where I obtained knowledge and certification primarily in barefoot massage, Erik Dalton’s Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques and Thai massage. I have received training in pregnancy massage and Reiki as well. Upon graduation in 2021 I worked for a spa, a chiropractor, and was an apprentice at a barefoot massage training center and spa. Within 6 months of gaining valuable experience at each of these places I decided to strike it out on my own and form Holistic Healing Massage and Bodywork, LLC. I have two offices, one in Durham and one in Apex which keep me quite busy! What started with one client who believed in me has evolved into about 100 clients that I see mostly on a monthly basis.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The first few months were pretty rough as I was approached by a fellow massage therapist who was planning on retiring and sending me her clients, except she never retired so I had to earn the trust of a few people and build my practice one client at a time. Those clients referred friends and family and pretty soon my schedule was full and I was able to pay my rent! Eventually word of mouth spread and what started with just a few dedicated clients turned into a wonderful network of friends, family, and referrals from physical therapists, acupuncturists, chiropractors, and other massage therapists. By the end of the year I made my goal of seeing 50 clients a month most of which I continue to see today. As of today I now see about 75-100 clients per month and continue to receive a few new referrals per month.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the sole owner of Holistic Healing Massage and Bodywork LLC. I offer massage therapy services including myofascial release by using deep tissue, Swedish, Thai, barefoot massage, and Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques. My massages are custom as I blend the techniques from each of these areas to formulate a massage that best suits the needs of the client. I once asked a client why people seem to find me over going to others and she said “it’s because you care”. My clients are like family to me. I am always so happy to see them, get to know them and just be there for them as they go through various stages in their lives. I strive to create an environment of caring through touch to help relieve stress, muscular tension, and promote relaxation. It’s the best job in the world!
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Spending the summers with my grandparents. They taught me everything from playing golf, cards, learning how to cook, and most importantly how to love.
