Conversations with Kendreek Mitchell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendreek Mitchell.

Hi Kendreek, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got started working on how to perfect my craft, staying disciplined, and diligent in my goals. Trial and error in finding out what works best for me. Art has been my path that I love to do in my younger years as a child. Being inspired by my brother and cousin that were great artists. It inspired me to want to learn how to draw and keep it in my heart having fun drawing, illustrating, and painting. I have ups and downs, but I wouldn’t trade it because it is what made me who I am today. Today I am still pushing toward the mark of being a full-time artist. Each day I get closer and closer. I thank God for it.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been struggles in staying consistent at times. A few bumps in the road but I’m still holding on. The missed opportunities, doors closed, financial troubles, it was just conditioning me to go through to get to where I’m destined to be.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
One of the things I do is draw/ illustrate characters. I love drawing characters and doing concept work that tells a story. Designing books, creating children’s books. Painting is therapeutic for me because normally I draw and paint what inspires me. Kim Jung Gi, Peter Han, and Karl Kopinski is who inspires me in the world of draftsmanship. I specialize in illustrations and designing. I’m known for my book illustrations, stylized design, character design, and portrait paintings. I’m Proud of illustrating 2 children’s book and I’m in the process of designing another one. Having an art painting in the CAM gallery last year, artshow in BWAC Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition, and having my first art exhibition at Fayetteville art council gallery (the artist spotlight). I’m humble to be doing what I’m doing and what makes me different is I stay true to myself and my style of being me.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
A few apps are Spotify and YouTube. Podcasts are Dark History, crime podcast, Marvel Wastelanders, and something educational or interesting in the background while I’m creating. Art books like Steve Huston Drawing Figures, Andrew Loomis Head and hands drawing book, and comics/ graphics novels from time to time. YouTube Videos of artist draw in the background while creating.
