We’re looking forward to introducing you to Nicole Burgess Marsh. Check out our conversation below.
Nicole, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Having integrity is, in my opinion, the most important quality to have. When you are an honest, moral and upright person, it shows in everything you do – whether it’s work, in friendships or in relationships. People also remember how you make them feel, and person of integrity always leaves a lasting impression.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an actress, writer, producer and publisher.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
When I was a junior in high school, I was asked to help choreograph the dance scenes for the school’s musical production of Grease. I was only expecting to assist with shorter dance scenes, but soon after production began, I was asked to take the helm and lead the entire ensemble choreography, for every single dance scene in the musical! Not only did I have to recreate the choreography from the film, but it was the first time I had a position of leadership on my own, with dozens of people following my lead and instruction. The production was such a hit, we were mentioned in the News & Observer, and I was recognized as the choreographer. It was the coolest feeling. The next year, I was asked to do the choreography for West Side Story, which had an equal amount of success and really solidified my authority as a choreographer, actress and team leader.
When did you last change your mind about something important?
When I decided to close my jewelry business. It was a hard choice. I love designing and being creative, but I wasn’t able to pour myself into the business the way I would have liked to. Instead, I’ve decided to focus on projects where I can be creative and where I can build as a team, opposed to trying to do it all on my own.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Being book smart isn’t the same as having wisdom. Many people think their degrees make them wise, but I’ve found that is usually not the case. Smart people are not the best leaders either, wise people are. As soon as people realize this, the world will change for the better.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m standing barefoot in my backyard, next to my dog, admiring my garden.
