Community Highlights: Meet Ford Matthews of FM Contracting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ford Matthews.

Hi Ford, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved building and working with my hands. Growing up, I spent countless hours helping my dad with projects—everything from decks to fences to whatever needed fixing. Those moments taught me not just the skills of the trade, but the pride that comes from creating something lasting.

I always knew I wanted to build my own company. After college, I spent about six years in the commercial construction industry, gaining experience, learning the business side, and understanding what quality and professionalism really look like. In 2008, I decided it was time to take the leap and started FM Contracting. It was the opportunity to blend my passion for craftsmanship with my drive to create a company built on integrity, communication, and high-quality work. And I’ve been building on that foundation ever since.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Has it been a smooth road? Definitely not. When I launched FM Contracting in 2008, I had no idea I was stepping into the beginning of a major housing crisis. Those first couple of years were the toughest—trying to get the business off the ground, build a client base, and make a name for myself in an industry that was struggling.

And like every business owner, we navigated COVID and everything that came with it. More recently, we’ve dealt with rising material costs and a shortage of skilled labor. It seems like there’s always a new challenge or bump in the road, but honestly, that’s part of what keeps this work interesting. Every obstacle forces you to adapt, grow, and stay committed to doing things the right way.

As you know, we’re big fans of FM Contracting . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
As a seasoned residential and commercial remodeler with over 20 years of experience, I have built a reputation for delivering exceptional quality work across a wide range of styles, including traditional, modern, farmhouse, and both indoor and outdoor spaces. My focus on attention to detail ensures every project is completed to the highest standards, reflecting the unique vision and needs of my clients.

In addition to my hands-on experience, I am honored to serve as a National Director for the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), contributing to the advancement of the industry. I am also actively engaged at the local and state levels, helping shape policies and practices that support the growth and development of the remodeling sector.

Whether working on a single-room remodel or a large-scale project, I approach each challenge with a commitment to craftsmanship, innovation, and client satisfaction. Let’s connect if you’re looking for a remodeling partner with extensive experience, industry insight, and a passion for quality work.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
My view on risk-taking is pretty simple: any small business owner is a risk-taker by nature. You can’t build something meaningful without stepping out of your comfort zone. There’s no reward without risk. Starting a company, investing in your team, taking on new projects—every decision carries some uncertainty. But calculated risks are what drive growth, and they’re often the difference between staying where you are and getting to where you want to be.
