We recently had the chance to connect with Alisha Reid and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alisha, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I’m most proud of building my sense of self. It’s not something that people can see, but they can feel it on you, and either are inspired or intimidated by it. My sense of self allows me to love myself and others unconditionally, see myself fully, and show up exactly as I’m supposed to, when I’m supposed to, and where I’m supposed to. I hope everyone takes the time to get to know themselves; it’s the most important relationship you have, along with God.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey y’all! I’m Alisha Reid, a cross-genre vocal recording artist reppin’ the 919! I’ve sung across various genres, including theatre, Neo-Soul, R&B/Soul as my main focus, and Gospel as my foundation. I’m excited to share my journey with you, especially my latest release, “Just Like Me”, where love becomes the unexpected, Neo-Soul style. Stay tuned for updates on my upcoming projects, visuals, and performances through the links below!
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
You know, I’ll never forget the era when my brother saw my potential before I ever saw it in myself. I decided to pick up basketball again after years away, going from 8th through 12th grade. Boy, was I rusty. But he coached me through it. As long as I showed up every day and gave my best effort, sometimes working out twice a day, he made sure he showed up with his best, both technically and motivationally.
What I admired most was that no two workouts were ever the same; each one was its own experience with a new lesson to learn. I remember people saying “she’s too girly” or “she can’t really play basketball” just because the results hadn’t shown yet. Then one day, they did, and kept showing after that.
Even though my basketball days were truly a case of “hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard,” now I get to channel that same grit and mindset into the things I am naturally talented at. Now I know a higher version of me always exists before it reaches the physical world.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me that the goal really isn’t success. Sounds crazy, right? Think of it like this: The more you chase something, the faster it runs away from you. But if you focus on consistency, the lessons you learn along the way, and simply progressing from where you used to be, you find peace. And if you get “lucky”, you’ll be successful too.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I used to think I had to prove myself to others to mean something in this world. Free my athletes and creatives from such a self-depriving mindset that we naturally adopt in competitive environments. Just be your best self.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
At this point, absolutely. There’s not a soul on earth that can tell me my gifts are in vain. Therefore, validation isn’t necessary, but self-evolution is.
