Today we’d like to introduce you to Yolanda Alford-Floyd.
Hi Yolanda , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Purpose Counseling Services, PLLC was built from a deep commitment to support individuals and families on their journey toward healing, growth, and meaningful transformation. Founded by Yolanda – Floyd, MA, LCMHCS, TF-CBT, Purpose Counseling Services opened its doors with a clear mission: to provide compassionate, culturally responsive, and evidence-based therapeutic care to the community.
With years of clinical experience and a passion for holistic wellness, Yolanda recognized the need for a counseling practice that treats the whole person addressing not only emotional and mental health concerns but also fostering resilience, empowerment, and purpose. Purpose Counseling Services was established to fill that need: as a safe, welcoming space where every client is met with dignity, respect, and individualized care.
Our Vision
At Purpose Counseling Services, we believe in the inherent strength of every person. We know that life’s challenges whether anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, parenting concerns, or relational stress can feel overwhelming, but also that healing is possible with the right support. The vision of our practice is to help clients:
discover clarity and direction in their lives,
build emotional and mental wellness,
develop healthy coping skills,
and live with confidence and purpose.
What Makes Us Different
Purpose Counseling Services blends clinical excellence with genuine care. Our approach is rooted in evidence-based therapies, including trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), while also honoring each individual’s unique background, culture, and life story.
We strive to create a therapeutic environment that feels supportive and empowering where clients feel heard, valued, and understood.
Growth and Community Impact
As the practice has grown, so has its reach. Purpose Counseling Services has expanded to include:
individual and family counseling services
specialized support for children, adolescents, and adults
wellness offerings like the Babe Cave Yoni Steam Lounge
therapeutic tools and resources, including printable guides and journals
products and services that encourage holistic wellness in everyday life
Through these offerings, Purpose Counseling Services continues to uplift and strengthen the community helping people not just cope, but thrive.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like many small, community-based mental health practices, Purpose Counseling Services, PLLC has navigated significant challenges particularly those associated with serving a rural and underserved area.
One of the earliest and ongoing obstacles has been limited access to funding. Operating in a rural community often means fewer grant opportunities, reduced private investment, and a higher percentage of clients who rely on public or underinsured coverage. Despite a high demand for mental health services, sustainable funding streams have not always matched the level of community need.
Additionally, insurance reimbursement cuts and low reimbursement rates have posed financial strain. Mental health providers frequently face delayed payments, denied claims, and reimbursement rates that do not reflect the true cost of providing quality, evidence-based care. These challenges can impact staffing, service expansion, and the ability to offer competitive wages especially in areas where recruiting and retaining licensed clinicians is already difficult.
Purpose Counseling Services has also encountered:
administrative burdens associated with credentialing and re-credentialing,
limited resources for technology and infrastructure in early stages,
and the emotional toll of serving high need populations with complex trauma histories while operating with lean resources.
Commitment Despite Barriers
Despite these challenges, Purpose Counseling Services, PLLC has remained steadfast in its mission. Rather than scaling back care, the practice focused on innovation, diversification, and community partnerships expanding services, integrating wellness offerings, and creating alternative revenue streams to support sustainability.
These struggles did not weaken the foundation of the practice; instead, they strengthened its resolve. Purpose Counseling Services continues to advocate for equitable access to mental health care, particularly for rural, underserved, and marginalized populations, while working toward long-term sustainability and growth.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the founder and clinical director of Purpose Counseling Services, PLLC, a community-based mental health practice committed to providing compassionate, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed care. My work centers on helping individuals, children, families, and women navigate life transitions, trauma, anxiety, relationship challenges, and emotional overwhelm while reconnecting with their sense of purpose.
I specialize in trauma-informed therapy, including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), adjustment related concerns, women’s mental health, parenting support, and relational healing. In addition to clinical work, I am well known in the community for my role as a mental health consultant for local Head Start programs, where I support teachers, staff, and families through classroom observations, behavior plans, staff trainings, and early-intervention strategies. This work allows me to help shape emotional wellness at the earliest stages of a child’s development and support educators who are often under-resourced yet deeply committed.
What truly sets my work apart is the integration of clinical counseling with holistic and empowerment-based wellness. Through The Babe Cave, a wellness space housed within Purpose Counseling Services, I offer women an opportunity to prioritize self-care in a way that feels restorative, intentional, and affirming. The Babe Cave bridges the gap between therapy and wellness, reminding women that healing is not only about survival it’s also about rest, release, and renewal.
I am also the creator of Sis, You Are Enough, a women’s empowerment movement focused on affirmation, healing, and reclaiming self-worth. Through journals, workshops, apparel, and community events, this initiative encourages women especially those who have spent years pouring into others to finally choose themselves without guilt.
What I am most proud of is building a practice that serves the whole community, especially in a rural and underserved area where access to quality mental health care is often limited. Despite challenges such as limited funding and insurance reimbursement cuts, I have remained committed to innovation, collaboration, and accessibility. Purpose Counseling Services is not just a therapy office it is a trusted community resource, a safe space, and a place where people feel seen, supported, and empowered.
At the core of everything I do is this belief: healing should be accessible, culturally grounded, and purpose-driven. That philosophy is what sets my work apart and continues to guide every service, partnership, and program I create.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The quality that has been most important to my success is resilience rooted in purpose.
My work is guided by my faith and a belief that I am called to serve others with compassion, integrity, and intention. That sense of purpose has helped me remain steady through challenges such as limited resources, systemic barriers, and the emotional demands of serving a high-need community.
I also believe in leading with empathy, humility, and strong community connection. Taking the time to listen to clients, families, educators, and women I serve allows me to respond thoughtfully and create services that are meaningful and impactful.
Ultimately, my success comes from staying grounded, adaptable, and committed to doing work that aligns with my values. When purpose leads the way, resilience follows and that has allowed me to continue growing, serving, and making a lasting difference.
