Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Mumma.
Hi Lindsay, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my practice right out of chiropractic college in 2012; I wanted to work with athletes primarily, and I started working with triathletes, runners, and CrossFit athletes. But as I was hoping to start having kids myself, I realized that despite having a doctorate and already helping a few pregnant patients, I was pretty clueless about pregnancy in general. I started investigating pretty heavily, and poured myself into the world of pregnancy. I got pregnant shortly thereafter and began attracting more and more pregnant patients. I still loved working with athletes, but found a new passion in helping women navigate the massive amount of changes that happen during pregnancy, especially for keeping active and healthy throughout.
My interests then spread to postpartum recovery, where I did even more of a deep dive and ended up creating several programs and classes to help women fully recover after giving birth. I also started teaching other chiropractors how to care for active women during pregnancy and support their recovery postpartum. My practice continued to grow and I hired associate chiropractic doctors as well as Dr. Peggy Regis Robinson, a Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor, to support its growth. I also added some wellness elements to support our patients, including an infrared sauna and Raleigh’s first cold plunge.
After supporting hundreds of women through pregnancy and postpartum, I had a lot of experience in working with pelvic floor dysfunction. I knew that most women were missing true postpartum recovery, and their pelvic floors were where this showed up most prominently. After presenting at the Parker Vegas seminar in 2022, I realized I didn’t have a great resource to give participants to learn more about pelvic floor dysfunction: I’d learned through various seminars, from different professions, and through extensive study over a decade. Nothing I could offer them was concise enough to be worthwhile. I decided I needed to write a book.
While I was writing the book, tragedy struck our office family. My Back Office Manager, Mary Marshall, was one of the victims in the Hedingham shooting in October of 2022. We were completely devastated and I struggled to keep my practice running in her absence: literally because she was such a crucial employee, and figuratively because I was trying to manage things while grieving her loss.
I finished my book and published /Your Pelvic Floor Sucks/ in early 2023. I was truly surprised by how successful it was and has been. I knew people needed help, which was why I wrote the book, but it stayed on Amazon’s best-seller list for several weeks as people found help within its pages and shared with others.
That year, I finished my Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization Practitioner certification, making me the first certified DNS Practitioner in North Carolina. I hired Dr. Cory Bailey, who brought his expertise as a chiropractor and strength and conditioning coach to help us expand our gym offerings. We now offer the only comprehensive DNS-based cyclical fitness training in the world: a truly unique blend of strength and conditioning, DNS principles, and female cycle support. Alongside our fitness and yoga offerings, we also have a full suite of recovery offerings: cold plunge, infrared sauna, compression boots, and vibration plate therapy.
My practice started 14 years ago with the idea of helping athletes move and feel better, but it’s expanded to be so much more than that, I am so grateful for the journey it’s been!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing has been as hard as losing Mary. That is a perspective shift I wouldn’t wish on anyone, but it makes the small stuff that usually bogs down business owners–like payroll, taxes, hiring, and even firing–so minuscule in comparison.
We’ve been impressed with Triangle Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Center, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We have the only certified DNS Practitioner in Raleigh (me!), the only DNS-based fitness and yoga classes, and a whole suite of wellness services. While we started as a chiropractic office and have our roots there, we offer a ton to the Raleigh community for feeling well, healing well, and moving well.
How do you define success?
Success to me is being able to positively impact the people around you: to leave a place or a person better than when you found them.
