Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerry Kee.
Hi Jerry , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began recording during college. After working 3 years at an electrical engineering job, I decided to change careers and focus on music. I had a friend at ncsu and moved to Raleigh for the music scene. I recorded and played in bands, becoming part of the community. At first the recording studio was a part time job, but eventually I was able to grow it into my sole source of income.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The usual money struggles with some lean years. I also struggled with depression and was slow to get help. Once I did, life was much better.
The studio was destroyed by a fire 7 years ago, and I had amazing support from the music community in rebuilding. I’ve been back to part time studio work since then.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I didn’t set out to have a recording career. I wrote and played music and recorded my songs. But the studio was a big investment. I started meeting musicians that couldn’t afford bigger studios and found my niche there. I think I am particularly good at helping bands record for the first time. I’m proud of all of the recording for young bands that I’ve done, and becoming part of the triangle music community. I’ve made a lot of music over my lifetime with a lot of good people. But, really, I’m just another fellow int community.
What makes you happy?
Music. Listening, writing, and performing. It just always has. There’s satisfaction and pride but mostly it’s my social sphere. It’s what connects me to people.
