Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Marino.
Angela, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Back in 2013, I authored a children’s book to highlight young students’ drawings and to also support the Duke Lemur Center. The following summer, I began teaching in person writing camps and classes to students ages 7-11. My mission was to make writing fun for students, especially those who struggled with writing and even dreaded it.
In 2017, I built the website, funwritingideas.com, to serve as a free resource for parents, teachers, and tutors. In 2021 I authored the book titled, “Kids Win at Writing: A Breakthrough Step by Step Guide to Teaching Children How to Write, Spell, and Read.
Simultaneously, I launched online writing classes that now serve students ages 5-18 across the United States and around the world. Since then, Writing Wonders has continued our commitment to building confidence in young writers and remains eager to serve our students well. New students can try any class for free!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has been relatively smooth, but a LOT of work!! I’m so thankful for the people and conversations that opened doors and opportunities for me. I walked through those opportunities knowing pretty clearly what to do next, which made the process feel relatively smooth.
Building my website and meeting the demand for our online classes has required a tremendous amount of work. The good is that I have enjoyed the work. However, it has meant sacrifices in other areas of life, particularly for my family.
Thankfully, Writing Wonders eventually reached a healthy balance, where I have quality time with my family all the while teaching and managing the business.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have been teaching for 26 years, and I now specialize in teaching writing. I’m so thankful for the growth of Writing Wonders. It brings me great joy to be helping hundreds of students grow in confidence in writing all the while working with dedicated and cheerful teachers. Probably the one thing that sets me apart from others is that I like and enjoy teaching writing and have created my own lessons for our students.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I LOVE watching a student who starts off hating writing grow into a confident and even cheerful writer.
Writing is so critical to students’ development and ability to communicate, yet it is a great challenge for so many children and teens. Overcoming this challenge their success, which is the ability to think of an idea, articulate and support it, all the while refining capitalization, spelling, and punctuation skills.
Becoming a great writer and ultimately a great communicator equips and empowers students to thrive and contribute in countless situations. Thus, it’s a genuine passion of mine to guide, help, and witness students grow in their ability to write and communicate.
