Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Shoup.
Jeff, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After a 15-year career working across nearly every physical therapy setting—home health, outpatient sports, skilled nursing, inpatient rehab, and acute hospital care—I found myself searching for a clinic that truly put patients first. When I couldn’t find it, I decided to build it.
Twelve years ago, that idea became an outpatient physical therapy clinic designed to give therapists the time, autonomy, and support they need to deliver care the way it should be delivered—with the patient’s needs guiding every decision. What started as a personal vision has grown into a platform where clinicians can practice at the highest level and patients can feel genuinely heard, supported, and cared for.
I was fortunate to be mentored by several incredible entrepreneurs along the way, but the most influential was John Ketchum. After retiring from a career in investment banking, John dedicated himself to mentoring and building meaningful projects, and I was lucky to be one of them. His wisdom, perspective, and steady guidance played a pivotal role not only in launching the clinic, but in sustaining its success through every stage of growth.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all—it’s been anything but smooth, and that’s part of what makes the journey meaningful. Building a clinic from the ground up meant navigating constant uncertainty: learning how to be both a clinician and a business owner, managing cash flow, hiring and developing the right people, and staying true to our values in a healthcare system that often rewards speed over quality.
There were moments when growth felt fragile—especially during times of reimbursement cuts, staffing shortages, and the pressure to scale in ways that didn’t align with our patient-first philosophy. The pandemic was its own test, forcing us to rethink operations overnight while still showing up for patients who depended on us.
One of the most challenging transitions came when we outgrew our original location. Moving was difficult—emotionally and operationally—but it ultimately opened a new chapter. Sixteen months ago, we relocated to a new building that finally aligns with the original vision for the clinic: a space designed around patient experience, therapist collaboration, and long-term care delivery rather than short-term efficiency. That move, while hard, reaffirmed why we started this journey in the first place.
Every struggle has clarified what matters most. Each obstacle has pushed us to refine our model, strengthen our culture, and become more intentional about how we care for both patients and our team. In many ways, the challenges didn’t slow us down—they shaped the clinic into what it is today.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At its core, our clinic exists to restore what many people feel is missing from healthcare: time, attention, and trust. We are an outpatient physical therapy practice built to guide people back to strength, balance, independence, and the life they love. Every visit is designed to be intentional, unrushed, and centered on the person in front of us—because we believe meaningful progress happens when care is personal.
We specialize in individualized, one-on-one physical therapy for patients with orthopedic injuries, chronic pain, balance and vestibular disorders, post-surgical needs, and complex cases that haven’t responded to traditional approaches. Many of our patients come to us after feeling stuck or unheard elsewhere, and our role is to help them “cross the bridge” from frustration and limitation back to confidence and movement.
What sets us apart is the way we practice. Our therapists are highly trained, deeply collaborative, and empowered to think critically rather than follow templates. That autonomy allows us to provide care that is evidence-based, thoughtful, and fully tailored to the individual—not the diagnosis code.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that we’ve stayed true to our original vision. As we’ve grown, we’ve resisted the pressure to become bigger at the expense of better. Instead, we’ve built a culture where therapists can practice at the top of their license and patients feel genuinely supported throughout their journey—not just treated and discharged.
What I want readers to know is that our clinic is not built around volume—it’s built around people. Everything we offer is designed to help patients move forward with confidence, reclaim their independence, and feel supported every step of the way. That commitment is the foundation of our brand and the reason we do what we do every day.
It is also very important that we introduce our therapy dog, Samwise. He is our official greeter and anti-anxiety tool for folks coming in. Having Sam here makes the experience very special.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The quality that has mattered most to our success is trusting the process and giving it time—and that belief is built into our name, Natural Bridges Rehabilitation.
I believe physical therapy doesn’t heal people; it creates the environment where healing can happen. The body does the healing—we simply guide, support, and remove the obstacles. That philosophy shapes how we treat patients, how we support our team, and how we grow as a business.
I often describe recovery using the image of natural stone bridges, like the arches in Utah. They take time to form, they’re shaped by stress and change, and they rarely look exactly like what was there before—but they are strong, functional, and unique. Healing works the same way. People often need a bridge to get back to health, and our role is to help them cross it at their own pace.
That commitment to time, trust, and progress over perfection has become the foundation of our success—and the heart of our brand.
Pricing:
- Paying for healthcare shouldn’t be a barrier to getting better. We work hard to make our services accessible by partnering with most insurance carriers and offering clear, fair cash rates for those who prefer to pay directly. Our goal is simple: to make high-quality, patient-centered physical therapy available to anyone who needs it, without cost becoming the reason someone delays care.
