Today we’d like to introduce you to Roxanne Bendick.
Hi Roxanne, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I first learned of coffee roasting in the early spring of 2015 during our daughter‘s final months of life. Melanie was undiagnosed special needs, and spent nearly 300 days of her 4 1/2 short years in the hospital. While living in the hospital with her, I became an avid coffee drinker. Her pulmonologist told me that he roasts his own coffee at home with a table top coffee roaster. That bug was put in my ear and I sat on that information for three years. In the summer of 2018 I got the roaster and started my own coffee roasting. This began as a hobby, just needing something new to do with my time. I learned that not all cups of coffee are the same. Most coffee on the shelves have bitter, chemically treated coffee. I was looking for a cleaner and healthier option. We just wanted to have the coffee bean the way God made it. As I became comfortable with my work I began sharing it with family and friends. They loved the coffee so much that they encouraged me to start a business and to sell it. We officially became Triple R Roasters in November 2021 starting with a 4 ounce tabletop coffee roaster and today we now have a 3 pound air roaster. We are a veteran owned company as my husband served in the Marine Corps. We are a family operated business named for the three of us my husband Rob, our son Riley and myself, Roxanne. One of my many goals for 2026 is to create a blend after each of us.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Funny story. My very first roast, which was still a hobby, I roasted inside the house and learned the hard way to never roast inside your house!! You know the smell of burnt popcorn? How it lingers for a day? Well this smell lingered for about a week clinging to all the fabric in our home and I didn’t even burn the coffee beans. Coffee roasting requires proper ventilation. Yes there has been some struggles. We began with a 4 ounce roaster which was quickly overwhelmed with a lot of coffee orders. We eventually had to buy an extension tube just to keep up with demand. That was our first expansion as a business. I spent a lot of hours on the back porch as it took an hour just to roast one pound of coffee. The extension allowed me to roast 8 ounces at a time. Eventually a decisions was made to form an LLC and purchase a commercial air roaster capable of roasting 3 pounds at a time.
I began having seizures in May of 2023 which has made things quite interesting. 2025 was my hardest year yet, having to cancel many of our in person events. It broke my heart not being able to spend time in the community, in fact we thought we might have to shut down our business entirely, at least for a season. Thankfully there has been a huge turn around and we have learned to adapt with my new normal and press forward.
In light of the coffee world itself, it was deeply shook in 2025! There was a drought in Brazil in 2024 which caused all coffee bean prices to rise significantly which of course affected our cost of green beans, the biggest being the cost for our decaf. Brazil produces around a third of the the world’s coffee so their lack of production put huge pressure on the other coffee producing countries, driving the price up by supply and demand. Did you know that coffee is the second most consumed beverage in the world?!
Lastly, I have an ongoing challenge of finding quality suppliers that meet my standards of organic, pesticide free beans.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I roast coffee different from most in our area. I air roast coffee, which is different from a drum roaster. It’s clean hot air roasted with no hydrogen sulfide from roasting in gas. Roasting this way reduces more of the acidity from the coffee bean making it easier on the gut. We specifically choose beans that are already low in acidity because we want drinking coffee to be a pleasurable experience even hours after drinking. We only use organic coffee beans. We’re very particular about our suppliers, ensuring that they truly are organic, that there are absolutely no pesticides used in the growth of those coffee beans. There are also no chemicals used to remove caffeine from our decaffeinated beans, they strictly go through a water process which removes over 99% of the caffeine. An added bonus is that the beans we use are fair trade and the farms they are coming from receive help in their communities as a result of using their coffee. We have learned of clean water sources being established, schools and libraries started and fair income wages going to the farmers that produce our beans. These beans come straight from the farm to our supplier leaving only one middle man between farm and our roaster. We pride ourselves in roasting the beans fresh upon order, we don’t keep a large pre-roasted inventory. We want the coffee to be as fresh as possible. We don’t believe in using Keurig pods because of the plastic involved in the brewing process. Plastics and heat do not mix because then micro plastics enter the body and are not healthy. As a company we do not encourage traditional coffee makers. I encourage glass, stainless steel and paper using French press or pour over method.,
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I did not have a mentor. I am self taught through research, reading and following coffee forums. A lot of trial and error during the hobby years has worked well for me.
