Hidden Gems: Meet Alan Mueller of Adaptive Challenge Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alan Mueller.

Hi Alan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up all over North Carolina: The Triangle, The Piedmont Triad, Mt. Airy, Boone and everything in between. I was not the early success story as it took me 7 years to finish college and my GPA was an abysmal 2.16. Eventually I scrapped and clawed my way into graduate school and then never looked back. I spent the next 20 years earning three graduate degrees and working with student leaders on college campuses. Although I worked in many roles at colleges throughout NC, like Campus Activities, Career Development Centers, Intercultural Education Centers etc., I always started leadership development programs for college students.

In my 20 years teaching college students how to be more effective leaders, I started to get requests from professionals in my community to do leadership development work. Before you know it, things had grown to a point that led to a career shift. In 2014 I formed Adaptive Challenge Consulting, and in 2021 I committed to working with my company full-time.

Also along the way, I took a class in Improv Comedy, and eventually joined an Improv Comedy Troupe. Through the years, I’ve integrated the use of improv comedy into my work with leaders. My most recent book is entitled Improv Comedy and the Art of Leadership.

At Adaptive Challenge Consulting, we help organizations grow by equipping their leaders with the mindset and tools to lead with clarity, connection, and impact. We partner with executives, HR leaders, and managers to address complex challenges, both obvious and beneath the surface. Through our human-centered, systems-thinking approach, we deliver high-impact training that builds resilient teams, strengthens leadership, and drives sustainable results.

Along my journey I’ve worked with several clients in the Triangle including NC State University, Meredith College, The Town of Carrboro. UNC Gillings School of Public Health, The Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University and many others.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh goodness, in addition to almost failing out of college several times, there was also a big life curveball in 2016. I was at the top of my game in 2015-16. I had just defended my dissertation and earned my doctorate, and I was an Assistant Dean at a small college. My main role was leading the college Career Development Center. I was also active in my professional community earning recognition and awards from professional associations, getting published, presenting at major conferences etc. Also I was a regular volunteer for Step up Greensboro, which has sister offices in Raleigh and Durham. Our mission at Step Up Greensboro was to work with out-of-work- adults. After volunteering there for years, I was invited to join the board. Then the unimaginable happened: I was laid off!

It was a humbling experience as I was a professional who focused on helping other people get jobs, who was also deeply involved in helping people in my community navigate being jobless.

What I didn’t realize about being laid off was that my life was about to unfold in an unexpected way. In the two years prior to being laid off, I did a tour of every single four-year college in North Carolina. We have 51 colleges and universities in our state, and I’ve been to every one of them. Along the way, I interviewed more than 40 deans-of-students. So as I sat on the couch the day after being laid off, realizing that I had spent a decade helping people find jobs and I didn’t know where to start. Then my wife said “don’t you know almost every dean of students in the state?” and my mind shifted. I thought to myself about who which of the deans of students I interviewed I really admired. I immediately thought of the dean of students at a neighboring college and called her up. A month later she hired me!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Adaptive Challenge Consulting?

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
One thing I learned is to be generous with my time paying things forward. Often people think of networking as some kind of transaction. We train people to do elevator speeches, imagining that they will have limited time to impress powerful people. But what if we flipped the script? What if we invested in making connections for up-and-coming talented people. What if we chose to connect and give our time generously to the next generation?

The advice: Don’t be transactional in your networking!
